75% of conservatives say the poor "have it easy."

This is somewhere in league with conservatives thinking video games are more dangerous than guns.

Divorced from reality.

More than three quarters of conservatives say the poor “have it easy”
By Christopher Ingraham
June 26

So much for compassionate conservatism.

The Pew Research Center is out with part two of its huge survey of American politics. The first part, released a couple weeks ago, focused on political polarization. For this round, Pew's researchers have created a political typology which "sorts voters into cohesive groups based on their attitudes and values." There's plenty to say about this - and you can see where you fall in Pew's typology quiz here! - but for now I want to focus on the chart above, particularly the left half.

More than three quarters of conservative Americans - those in the steadfast conservative, business conservative, and young outsider typology groups - agree that "poor people have it easy because they can get government benefits without doing anything." Only seven percent of steadfast conservatives say that the poor "have hard lives."

Even a not-insignificant share of left-leaning groups say that the poor have it easy. But overall the widespread agreements among conservatives on this point is what's really striking here. There are reasonable, well-intentioned arguments on either side of many poverty-related issues - about the causes of poverty (see the right half of the chart), or whether government benefits provide a leg up or simply perpetuate poverty, for instance.

But I have a hard time understanding how you could read about the experience of families relying on food stamps to eat, or those trying to manage chronic conditions with Medicaid, and conclude that these people somehow have it easy. For context, here is a brief and wildly incomplete list of the ways life is "easy" when you're poor:The notion that poor people have it easy is at odds with the data.

Well, the poor can get government benefits without having to do anything. Unquestionably, that's easier than taking responsibility for your life and doing something about your situation. Doing nothing is easier than doing something.

It appears from the article that people who work enjoy a better standard of living and healthier outcomes than those who do not work. I am positively blown away by this discovery.

True, but that doesn't make their quality of life easier or better.

Conservatives have this weird idea that collecting welfare puts the poor on equal footing with the rest of America. "They have what i have, but i worked for mine while they get theirs free!".

That's so detached from reality.

There's a specific reason why he asked that question, but you have to read the story to find out. Seeing as how you don't ever seem to know much about this topic I feel it's good if I let you learn rather than teach you.

The leper said "If you are willing, you can make me clean."

And the response was "I am willing, be clean"

Well, I'm conservative and I don't think the poor have it easy. They've been ****ed by the shitty monetary policy of the state. Add to that the ridiculous walls to climb to move out of dependance on the welfare state that have been put into place by Democrats and there isn't any wonder why inequality is growing.

Of course, the left dominates the education system, so I'm not holding my breath that the poor will learn about this de-facto fuedal system any time soon and change their voting habits appropriately.

I don't hate the poor. I pity them.

I'm not sure what translation you might use but in all three places the Greek is the same. "If you are willing, you can make me clean", and the response "I am willing, be clean".

I was referring to why Jesus asked the question in the first place. It wasn't as Jay Cosmo believed, to be insulting.

You are correct that it was Paul (in Thessalonians) - I was focused on the picture and misspoke.

But there you go otherwise misunderstanding the Bible. Yes you pay your taxes and support your government - but that does NOT in no way shape or form mean vote for high taxes and fall prey to radical governments... or do you have to have every detail spelled out to you?

As for your other comment, are you ****ing up Romans 13:1-7? Because if that's your intent, please chew your own ball sack off; you should not reproduce.
