Obama gets some Texas BBQ

AustinChief, gives us your report! Were you there? How is Franklins? Better than Salt Lick?

AUSTIN - Never let it be said there's no such thing as a free lunch, when it comes to a presidential visit.

On Thursday, after President Obama finished a 40-minute speech at the historic Paramount Theater in downtown Austin, his motorcade sped a few blocks away for a quick lunch at Franklin's, a noted barbeque spot that was packed as always with a lunch crowd.

As presidents tend to do, Obama cut to the front of the line so he could order takeout for his official travel party — offering to pay for the two people he bumped ahead of.

The lucky lunchers? Houston resident Bruce Finsted and his daughter, Faith, of Austin.

Their order? Three pounds of beef, 2 pounds of ribs, a half-pound of sausage and a half-pound of turkey for themselves and two other family members already seated.

When Obama heard their order, he seemed shocked: “Hold on now. How many folks are you guys feeding? Just kidding.”

Smiling, he quickly paid the tab - first pulling out a wad of $20 bills and then, after asking his trip director if his credit card was good, offering his JP Morgan card.

The tab? Around $300.

Now, that's a government right from the top.

After Obama bought lunch, he departed with takeout for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport for Air Force One and a flight back to Washington.

I dont like the man but he is the POTUS and the POTUS doesnt stand in line for anyone. If nothing else for safety concerns. The longer you stand in one place the more you make yourself a target.

I absolutely can't stand Obama, but yeah, the POTUS doesn't wait in line. And hell, for that matter, Franklin's isn't exactly struggling, did they really need to charge him?

Yes Franklin's is better than Salt Lick, but then again I think the Salt Lick is complete ass so that isn;t saying much.

Franklin's is pretty decent BBQ but mostly hype.

In my experience, most Texas BBQ falls into that category.

One of my friends' dad (Texas born and raised) told my friend he was retarded one time for saying Texas BBQ was better than KC.

This thing he's doing right now is actually pretty interesting. He's been going around to all of the noteworthy "All-American" joints where they basically have All-American food. The best ribs. The best burger, the best pizza, you name it. On one hand, he's using it as a political tool - he wants to look like he connects to the regular joe. Your mileage my vary on that. But on the other hand, you can see that he's effectively using his greatest tool, his celebrity, to give these areas an economic kick. These businesses aren't going to get any better advertising than having the president stop in with every camera in the state aimed at him.

Politically, it's annoying, because all he's doing is whining on this trip. But from an economic perspective, I think his team has come across an interesting idea.

Yep. On that same note. I took a bunch of buddy's up to KC (FFL league crap and preseason game at Arrowhead) and one of them is married to a Schmidt. The Schmidt's are the Kreuz's Market/Schmitty's BBQ people from Lockhart. Even he said that KC BBQ was head and shoulders better.

My theory is that Texas pitmasters are pretty much as good at what they do but the difference in quality of Midwest meat vs Texas meat is insanely huge.

(at least that's what I tell the girls in Austin)

Yes, the quality of the meat is definitely a factor.

I'm not entirely sold on the 'quality of meat' argument, otherwise;

we'd have a higher steakhouse profile
Chicago would have at least dipped their toe into the premium beef BBQ market
Carolina pulled pork wouldn't be so close on our heels
St. Louis wouldn't be making the strides to close the gap that it is

I've tried sauces national, supermarket, chain, and boutique from each region, and KC, whether it's hot and spicy or sweet and smoky, come out on top.

All the best BBQ places in the MW have those elaborate smokers with all the ducts and gauges and vents.

KC has perfected how to make something crispy, smoky as hell and tender as shit, and has developed the perfect sauces to put on them.

There's something more than the meat at play.
