Science 2.0: Atheists Might Not Exist

Dave Lane's head just exploded:

Cognitive scientists are becoming increasingly aware that a metaphysical outlook may be so deeply ingrained in human thought processes that it cannot be expunged.

While this idea may seem outlandish—after all, it seems easy to decide not to believe in God—evidence from several disciplines indicates that what you actually believe is not a decision you make for yourself. Your fundamental beliefs are decided by much deeper levels of consciousness, and some may well be more or less set in stone.

This line of thought has led to some scientists claiming that “atheism is psychologically impossible because of the way humans think,” says Graham Lawton, an avowed atheist himself, writing in the New Scientist. “They point to studies showing, for example, that even people who claim to be committed atheists tacitly hold religious beliefs, such as the existence of an immortal soul.”

In the United States, 38% of people who identified themselves as atheist or agnostic went on to claim to believe in a God or a Higher Power (Pew Forum, “Religion and the Unaffiliated”, 2012).

In the US, only 20 per cent of people have no religious affiliation, but of these, only one in ten say they are atheists.

Atheists think of an Immortal soul? I don't know anyone arrogant enough to think they will live forever. Its less believable than Mary Poppins.

Unadulterated, bullshit.

Religion, faith is learned.

I'm agnostic. Why? Mostly, because my parents are.

I wasn't brought up with it.

People choose to believe in God. It's not innate.

Remember when you made the laughable claim about all your successful "de-conversions"? It looks like you've got quite an uphill battle.

Think of "Soul" as DNA, and if you reproduce you will have everlasting life.

Interesting that you didn't highlight this part:

This line of thought has led to some scientists claiming that “atheism is psychologically impossible because of the way humans think,” says Graham Lawton, an avowed atheist himself, writing in the New Scientist.

My opinion is that humans evolved (psychologically) to see patterns. It's a great survival trait. Following an animal to hunt and kill it, learning when and what to plant at different times of the year or even the roots of the scientific method itself. Sometimes it gets you in trouble though. Optical illusions, that creepy feeling you might get in the dark when you think someone is watching you or those hunches that don't pan out. So...some people see things in their everyday lives that fit into a larger pattern that includes a supreme being and some people don't. The nonbelievers will tell you you're superstitious, and the believers will tell you that you just don't get it, if you disagree with either group. It's not really worth arguing about but we do it anyway because it's fun and entertaining.

I read this article earlier this week and knew that it would piss off atheists. Seems logical to me. Sort of like gay guys who deny they are gay. They can deny it all they want, but down deep, at a level that we can't comprehend, I think it's fundamentally impossible not to believe in a source for all this energy.

I don't know why the article would make any atheist mad, they point out numerous statistics. If 20% of Americans claim "no religion" and only 10% of them are committed atheists, that's 2% of the public. Why be mad at facts?

I prefer agnostic. While the Christian god is a LOL concept, I cannot prove or disprove the existence of a higher being.

Such a being might be all powerful, or perhaps just more powerful than us. Remember, an alien race with highly advanced technology might appear godlike. Think of how people 2000 years ago would react to our technology.

Superior aliens haven't been smart enough to actually come visit us. Also, why would technology scare people of old times? A car or airplane wouldn't really address the questions of what happens after you die, and it doesn't address basic rules for interpersonal conduct (which is why the 10 Commandments et al are still taught today).

Wasn't it like 2000 hardcore atheists Lane has created in his lifetime? Something like that.
