So what do you guys think of Brownback?

I guess 100 Republican officials endorsed the Democratic gubernatorial nominee for Kansas.

Brownback decided to significantly cut income taxes for the rich, and - surprise! - that didn't result in an increase of tax revenues. Kansas' credit rating has been cut and it's used up a large percentage of it's rainy day fund.

Thoughts? Love him? Sick of him yet?

The tax thing, I'm worried about. I wholeheartedly agree that lower taxes spurn growth, but I'm not sure the state can stay solvent long enough to take effect. In addition, I don't think the state has enough other things going for it to attract business. Labor, skilled and unskilled the same is tough to come by most places. But I won't lie, it was nice on March 1 to submit my K40. That really helped this fat bastard.

He's been friendly oil and gas. That's a huge plus.

In his commentary he's been anti-prairie chicken protection but hasn't done a damn thing about it. I wish he would. Goddamnded mother****ing treehuggers.

I think he's been pro-coal fire. At least I think he's helping to push the sunflower plant in Holcomb. That shit needs built 5 years ago.

He spearheaded the Local Enhanced Management Area for the Ogalalla aquifer. He came to my town and said that he's passed legislation to give the local groundwater management district localized control of water conservation and provided the resources to get it done. That's the best I've felt about any governance in a long ****ing time. It might be the first time since Reagan that control has flowed down not up. Either way it was a good thing. Now, I acknowledge that the dumb ducking water right holders pissed in the wind and couldn't find anything they could agree on, but at least power was flowing the right direction.

The thing that impressed me about the LEMA thing was he didn't have anything to gain politically. It was a program for the good of the region (that nobody on Topeka cares about) and cost him time and effort. Moreover, as far as I can remember the last governor to set foot in Scott County was Joan ****ing Finney.

I like a lot of the things he's doing, but ultimately I think several of them will fail.
Holy ****. You are just captain red state aren't ya? What company line don't you tow? I'm guessing you think raising minimum wage with stifle growth too.

Brownback is exhibit A for what is happening to the GOP....drifting further, and further into the abyss of political extremism. The lunatic fringe has taken hold.

My thoughts on Brownback is that I'm glad he doesn't live in my state.

Oh. My bad. I thought this was a presidential thread. A guy from 1870 is quite electable in Kansas. He should grow a large beard and sideburns, though.

Talk of Brownback dominates local politics, because most of the policies try to pretend we aren't having a massive revenue loss by shifting obligations to local governments, most of whom have had to raise property taxes to make up the difference.

He also kept the sales tax rate increase when it was set to expire, shifting taxes to the middle class.

His tax plan was not just the standard "republicans like to cut taxes" plan. It was a reckless, experimental plan where he actually said revenues ere going to go up. He literally wheeled in Arthur Laffer to address the legislature and promise this.

As Buehler points out though, most people don't make decisions to move to Kansas based on reductions in state income taxation. The experiment was doomed from the start and he managed to convert a hundreds of millions surplus into a hundreds of millions deficit in just a couple of years. And that's after pulling every shell game with revenues he could find.
