http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/27/bu...=top-news&_r=1

Economic inequality in the United States has been receiving a lot of attention. But it’s not merely an issue of the rich getting richer. The typical American household has been getting poorer, too.

The inflation-adjusted net worth for the typical household was $87,992 in 2003. Ten years later, it was only $56,335, or a 36 percent decline, according to a study financed by the Russell Sage Foundation. Those are the figures for a household at the median point in the wealth distribution — the level at which there are an equal number of households whose worth is higher and lower. But during the same period, the net worth of wealthy households increased substantially.

The Russell Sage study also examined net worth at the 95th percentile. (For households at that level, 94 percent of the population had less wealth and 4 percent had more.) It found that for this well-do-do slice of the population, household net worth increased 14 percent over the same 10 years. Other research, by economists like Edward Wolff at New York University, has shown even greater gains in wealth for the richest 1 percent of households.

For households at the median level of net worth, much of the damage has occurred since the start of the last recession in 2007. Until then, net worth had been rising for the typical household, although at a slower pace than for households in higher wealth brackets. But much of the gain for many typical households came from the rising value of their homes. Exclude that housing wealth and the picture is worse: Median net worth began to decline even earlier.

“The housing bubble basically hid a trend of declining financial wealth at the median that began in 2001,” said Fabian T. Pfeffer, the University of Michigan professor who is lead author of the Russell Sage Foundation study.

The reasons for these declines are complex and controversial, but one point seems clear: When only a few people are winning and more than half the population is losing, surely something is amiss.

May I interrupt to ask how you feel about your Obama vote now? Looks like he changed nothing. Income inequality got worse under him - the gilded age served on a platter of skyrocketing corp profits and stock market wealth held by the few.

And yet, you dumb ass, gullible libs cried at his speeches and chanted "Yes we can!" at the top of your voices. Suckers!

Actually in 2012 I voted for Gary Johnson as a protest vote because I knew my CA vote didn't matter anyway.

I never had that great of expectations for Obama because I am not really a liberal. I just seem like it because you all are so far gone around the bend to the right. We finally joined the rest of the developed world and got some form of UHC (albeit crappy and hobbled, but still better than the *nothing* republicans had planned) - that was my major reason for voting for Obama in 2008. I think in the long run this is going to be a huge boon to our country - just as it has been for everyone else.

As far as a lot of the other stuff unfortunately for Obama the House is in a new world where most republicans fear getting primaried from the right much more than losing in the general election. So they have a huge dis-incentive to ever compromise with Obama on anything ("worked with Obama" is pretty much the kiss of death in a republican primary). And of course they know dumb ass, gullible RWNJS will still blame Obama for not compromising enough. That's just the reality of the situation.

I posted in another thread that I voted for him both times, but if he were running again right now, I'd be a "maybe", mostly depending on his opponent. I actually think he's done a good job economically and an adequate job socially, but he's been an epic faceplant internationally.

FYP since it works that way too!

I for one was against temporarily lopping off 2% of the Social Security Payroll tax because I thought it was stupid to take away from a broken system that can use every nickel it brings in. It certainly wouldn't have done me any good to have that money in my pocket. So I just upped my 401k contribution by 2%

I think you're vastly in the minority about not doing any good to have that money in your pocket.

It amazes me how black Americans flocked to the polls in 2012 to re elect their hero. Despite being crushed by the recession. I wonder why they did that, what could it be? I just can't quite put my finger on it

Because they're terrified of RWNJs who would send them back to Jim Crow if they could.

But seriously: blacks did much better under Reagan, Bush I and then Bush II than they did under the Magic Negro. If you have to rank where you'd want to go as a black, in order:

1) Reagan
2) Bush I
3) Bush II
4) Magic Negro
5) Jim Crow
