Russian bombers penetrated U.S. airspace at least 16 times in past 10 days

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/...e-least-16-ti/

Russian strategic nuclear bombers conducted at least 16 incursions into northwestern U.S. air defense identification zones over the past 10 days, an unusually sharp increase in aerial penetrations, according to U.S. defense officials.

The numerous flight encounters by Tu-95 Russian Bear H bombers prompted the scrambling of U.S. jet fighters on several occasions, and come amid heightened U.S.-Russia tensions over Ukraine. Also, during one bomber incursion near Alaska, a Russian intelligence-gathering jet was detected along with the bombers.

I know there used to constant jets in the air that took off from Strategic Air Command outside of Omaha, but I believe they may have stopped that a few years ago (prior to Obama, although it still may be his fault).

That's different. As part of the strategic triad, which involved nuclear weapons aimed at Russia 24/7, we had (1) ICBMs at various land-based sites within the Continental US, (2) SLBMS (submarine-launched ballistic missiles) on "boomers" (nickname for subs that carried ballistic missiles, as opposed to attack subs, which are designed to attack ships, primarily, though Tomahawks can attack land-based targets also), and (3) bombers. The bombers were literally in the air 24/7, based on a rotation system. They were in the air continuously until some point in the George Bush administration (the first one).

The point there is you don't want your bombers caught on the ground and unable to get into the air and heading for the USSR because their missile strike surprises us.

It's impractical to have fighters constantly patrolling the ridiculously large expanses of the West Coast and Alaska, especially as, to my knowledge, there is more htan sufficient time to get them into the air to intercept anything coming to "visit". I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty confident I'm right.

Again, the real story here is the increase in intrusions.
That's nice and all. I'm pointing out how the headline was propaganda plain and simple.

How do you know that it was intended to be inflammatory and fear-causing?

Because it was completely false and presented in a way to cause the most fear.

Because the article itself says the truth of what is happening. But, as anyone in journalism knows, the majority of people don't read articles. And, from the evidence of this thread, don't know the difference between actual U.S. airspace and Defense Identification Zone. Thus, the majority of people who see the headline will walk away with the wrong idea Russia actually entered U.S. airspace. An inflammatory and fear causing thought.

How do you know that they knew the difference between our territorial airspace and ADIZ?

N.O.L.O ops for target drones. NOLO=No onboard living occupant. So in the local pattern or on range control, NOTAMS (if transiting airspace) you declare where they are occuring. Typically no warhead shots so we can re-use them. As as an old test director when you want a marketing shot with a live warhead, you have to buy the drone with your project funds in advance, I also made sure it was full of fuel. The evolution: 80s-we shot F86s, 90s-F4s, this century-F16s. The fun is typically when working on the data links and having a guy "fly" it/ride along in case of problems prior to it being used as a target.

I don't think I could shoot at a Sabre.
