Blood Feud: Clinton blames Islamic militants rise on Obama policies

Clinton blames Islamic militants rise on Obama policies

Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton blamed the rise of Islamist militants in Iraq and Syria on failures of US policy under President Barack Obama, in an interview published Sunday.

Clinton specifically faulted the US decision to stay on the sidelines of the insurgency against Syria's President Bashar al-Assad as opening the way for the most extreme rebel faction, the Islamic State.

"The failure to help build up a credible fighting force of the people who were the originators of the protests against Assad —- there were Islamists, there were secularists, there was everything in the middle -— the failure to do that left a big vacuum, which the jihadists have now filled," Clinton told the Atlantic.

Clinton, widely considered an undeclared presidential candidate, was an unsuccessful advocate of arming the Syrian rebels when she was secretary of state during Obama's first term.

She was interviewed before the US president's decision Thursday to order limited air strikes to check an IS offensive into Kurdistan, which threatened US nationals and facilities and sent thousands of refugees fleeing into the mountains.

Obama, who oversaw the US withdrawal from Iraq in 2011, vowed not to send US troops back into the country and said Iraqis needed to confront the jihadist threat by forming an inclusive unity government.

Clinton, however, suggested in the interview that Obama lacked a strategy for dealing with the jihadist threat.

"Great nations need organizing principles, and 'Don't do stupid stuff' is not an organizing principle," she said referring to an Obama slogan.

She said the United States must develop an "overarching" strategy to confront Islamist extremism, likening it to the long US struggle against Soviet-led communism.

"One of the reasons why I worry about what's happening in the Middle East right now is because of the breakout capacity of jihadist groups that can affect Europe, can affect the United States," she said. "Jihadist groups are governing territory. They will never stay there, though. They are driven to expand. Their raison d'etre is to be against the West, against the Crusaders, against the fill-in-the-blank—and we all fit into one of these categories.

"How do we try to contain that? I'm thinking a lot about containment, deterrence, and defeat," she said.

Her arguments, seen as an attempt to distance herself from Obama, echoed those of Republican critics who accuse Obama of allowing a power vacuum to develop by failing to bring US leadership to bear in conflicts from Syria to Iraq to Ukraine.

By the way, if you haven't read Blood Feud, it's definitely worth a look. Edward Klein is a former NY Times Magazine editor in chief, so we're talking about a serious journalist here. As you read it, there's little doubt that he's got a small opinion of Obama, and a large opinion of Bill Clinton, but that aside, it's like a Rosetta Stone for understanding just how much in disarray the Democrat party is right now.

Also, it gives stories like this one some context. We're going to see a lot of bad blood between the Clintons and the Obamas in the coming year(s) as they battle for the heart and soul of the Democrat party. This could get real ugly.

Like a lot of us have been saying for a long time, we sure would be a lot better off if Clinton had won in 08 instead of Obama. As much as conservatives disliked the Clintons for this policy or that one, or for the parade of corruption and scandals, at least they are basically competent and qualified for the office. You wouldn't have what we have now, which is a frightening look at what the world looks like without any leadership.

The Obama doctrine, which seems to be to alienate historic allies and lead from behind, act against our national interest, and apathetically leave vacuums for dangerous elements to fill, basically has been a trial of sorts of many far left foreign policy ideas, and we can see in miniature where those things would lead.

Giving some random guy off the street the oval office isn't such a good idea, it turns out.

OP is not really part of that book. The book has been pretty well trashed from what I have seen.

If I read the OP right sounds like Hillary is going to break from Obama. Thats not good for Obama as he tries to survive the last 2 years without going down as the worst since Carter.

The Clintons care about one thing - The Clintons. If it will help her presidential bid to destroy him, then that's what the Clinton machine will do.

He's a sitting duck now, as a failed president with terrible ratings and who candidates want to appear distant from. He has nothing to offer her except his chin.

Most Politicians at that level all care about self first. We have had some who were probably pretty genuine and dedicated to the country but people like Obama and Hillary are in it for themselves. Its not a party thing. Rs had Nixon don't forget. The D's lack a middle strong player. That will kill them till they wake up. Obama has shown what the nutty left is all about. Hillary is just as nutty but will cloak it better

Right now I have to score the feud 89-34 in favor of The Obama's they have just been curb stomping the Clinton's mercilessly. Hillary has to clothesline him and proceed to use the pile driver to finish him off.

Use the sleeper hold on Michelle to shut her up. The Clinton's can still make a comeback of epic proportions.

Dumb bitch. It was never our responsibility in the first place. This is exactly why one country cannot play World Police successfully.

Yeah, Edward Klein is really far off the mark with Blood Fued, huh? This party is just getting started. 2016 just blew wide open.

It is pretty amazing how the liberal press phrases things.

From TJ's politico link..."Some foreign policy experts, meanwhile, are criticizing her views as too simplistic; one analyst called them downright disloyal to President Barack Obama."

Its as if anyone with a divergent POV who dares to speak it is a disloyal subject of the great Barak.

I can't stand the old girl in any case but it will be interesting to see how the house and senate members line up. This will impact the money masters and who and how the bucks role in LiberalLand.
