If you're a huge TOOL fan...

...shouldn't you know about Danny Carey?

I stopped by the liquor store today and the guy tending the place was wearing a TOOL t-shirt. I asked him about his shirt and he said he's a huge fan.

We chatted a while and I mentioned that Danny Carey is from Paola and that I played basketball against him in summer leagues at Bell Recreational Center in KCK. The dude was completely baffled. Danny who?

I will be at the show in Dallas. Primus always does a great stage show.

Oh! And another BTW... Primus initially wanted Stewart Copeland on drums for the fall tour. He wasn't available.

Oh and for what it's worth I think you can be a "huge fan" of a band or group without knowing all their names, where they're from, what cables they like to use and who their first girlfriend was.

I would consider myself a "huge fan" of Widespread Panic but can't give you all the members rundowns.

That's fine except for the fact that Danny Carey transcends his association with TOOL. There are very few exceptional polyrhythmic drummers in the world. Danny Carey is one of them; very unique and very well known.

Blow me.

He's better in my opinion, and its really not close.

Neil doesn't do much for me, although there's no denying he's one of the elite drummers. Still, I find Tool's music much more inspiring than Rush's, and that's no doubt colored my view.

Which is funny.
To be fair, that happens with most every band ever. The lead singer and lead guitar player are the most-recognized members of the band almost always.

There are VERY few rock/metal music fans that even know what a poly-rhythmic drummer is.

I wouldn't agree that Danny Carey is one of the few exceptional poly-rhythmic drummers either.

Carmine Appice is very good, as is Bill Bruford, Roger Taylor, and Frank Zappa. If you want contemporaries of Carey, there's always Mike Portnoy.

As a long time drummer, here is my list:

1a) Steve Gadd (unbelievable ability to play any style).
1b) Tony Williams - same as Steve Gadd.
2) Danny Carey - Ridiculous ability to tighten up polyrhythmic measures.
3) Stewart Copeland - Perfected the "reggae" style of drumming that is still the benchmark.
4) Neil Peart - Unbelievably fast hands and feet.
5) Buddy Rich - Could do with one drum that others can't do with five.
