Muser in the running to manage Mariners

Muser in the running to manage Mariners
By DICK KAEGEL
The Kansas City Star

Former Royals manager Tony Muser is among at least 10 candidates to succeed Lou Piniella as manager of the Seattle Mariners.

Muser will be interviewed by the Mariners on Thursday.

"I'm flattered, and I'll go in and do the best I can," he said Monday from his Los Alamitos, Calif., home.

Muser, 55, was fired by the Royals last April 29 after an 8-15 start. He took over the club on July 9, 1997, and had a 317-431 record in just more than 41/2 seasons.

Piniella was released from his contract by the Mariners and was announced as manager of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Monday.

Other candidates include former major-league managers Terry Francona (Phillies), Jim Riggleman (Cubs), Lee Elia (Cubs, Phillies) and Buddy Bell (Tigers, Rockies).

Also under consideration are Mariners coaches John McLaren and Bryan Price, Yankees coach Willie Randolph, Orioles coach Sam Perlozzo and T.acoma manager Dan Rohn. T.acoma is the Mariners' Class AAA affiliate.

The search is being conducted by Pat Gillick, the Mariners' executive vice president and general manager.

"Pat Gillick is pretty thorough, so they'll take their time and do it right," Muser said.

During Piniella's 10 years as manager, the Mariners were in the playoffs four times but never reached the World Series. The club won 116 games in 2001, when Piniella was American League manager of the year but slipped to 93 victories last season and failed to make the playoffs.

"It's a good club, a good town, a good following, very nice ballpark and we'll just see what happens," Muser said.

Muser has no working history with Gillick but believes he was recommended by others in the Seattle organization.

"I got a call about a week ago from (Mariners vice president) Roger Jongewaard, and he's very close to Pat in the organization," Muser said. "He wanted to know my status, and I told him I was a free agent."

Muser said he's been contacted by other clubs about jobs, mainly coaching positions.

"I can't say who right now because they've asked me to keep it quiet, but I've talked to several clubs," he said. "Everybody is trying to put their list together for the interview process."

There are still managerial openings for the Cubs and Brewers and possibly the Giants, who have Dusty Baker in limbo.

I always maintained that once the Royals finally wised up and dumped the Muse, that he would never manage another game in the Majors. I still believe that.

Unless the Mariners are a lot stupider than i think they are...

Dr. Bombay...

Are you the same Dr. Bombay from the Fanhome board? I've never posted over there, but I read it frequently.... I think I even borrowed the new home uni link from you.

Yep, it's me. I don't like the new Fanhome. With my ancient dial-up connection, it takes at least 90 seconds to load. That's way to long to sit there plucking my fiddle. I'll probably lurk over there and post some, but I need a faster board. This one's plenty fast but not very active. That's cool. It is a Chiefs board primarily after all.

I'm sure the Mariners will want to play with his hardballs.

Royals did play hardball.
