Brock,
Have you ever seen the ultimate fighting championships?. Rickson Gracie was famous for fighting without rules. It is VERY big in Japan and Brazil. The entire Gracie family has been very famous for winning these competitions worldwide. Rickson was never defeated. His brother Royce fought in the UFC. Nobody has ever done more to support their chosen sport than Rickson and their extended family. |

Can't argue for you those on your list, but here's my 2˘:
1. Jordan. No one has ever affected the sport he/she played the way MJ did. 2. Jesse Owens. The feats were great, but the time in which they were done makes him even more important. 3. Gretzky. Duh. 4. Ali. Best fighter ever. His mouth and self-promotion made it possible for the mega-superstars of today. 5. Thorpe. The man did it all. Without him there would be no NFL. 6. Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Best female athlete ever. Could probably outdo most men on this list. 7. Pele. Most people don't think soccer is a true sport. For those that think that way—try it some time. You won't last five minutes. 8. Bo Jackson. Most incredible physical specimen that has ever lived. 9. Bill Russell. No one won more championships. While maybe part of great teams, he was the cog that made it all work. 10. Jim Brown. Would've set rushing records that would never have been broken had he not quit. Imagine Okoye size with Sanders' like balance and T.Davis' vision. Just my opinion. MM --Note: not one freaking non-human on the list (for you ESPN). When you say greatest athlete, do you mean most breathtaking performances? domination over co-competitors? star-power? mental approach? creativity? pure stength? size? structure? agility? endurance, etc.? What?
If its on a pure physical ability measure, I'd expect some 'real' wrestlers, tri-athletes, swimmers and bicyclers, as well as good deal more soccer players. If its relative to co-competitors [ie., for his time], I'd expect more female atheletes, particularly Babe Diedrickson. If its innovation, add Tiger Woods to the list. |

BF--
Definitely one of the best QBs ever, but definitely not one of the best athletes. Besides, he wouldn't have even been a Bronco had he not cried and whined like a little pu$$y when he was drafted by the Colts (?) and threatened to play baseball. That's why I never liked him. Sure, he broke my heart when he beat the Chiefs time and time again, but my hatred for horseface started the day he was drafted. Brock-- ROTFLMAO!! Her and Torri Wells should make some kind of list! Perhaps "The 10 Most Bendy and Flexible Females". MM --Wondering where Butterbean falls on this list. |

JC--
Good questions. I choose mine by attempting to apply all of those factors. In anything like this, personal bias also comes into play (I played a lot of soccer, so I like Pele. Other like golf and choose Palmer, or Woods or someone else). I also picked people whose careers are over. Picking someone still active can be dangerous. A few years ago, T.Davis might've made the list. Now, probably not. MM --Tries to look at the whole picture. [This message has been edited by Mark M (edited 12-04-2000).] |

Well, obviously we are going to pick athletes from sports that we are biased to, so I will attempt to do the same. These are in no particular order. Fellows - these people are athletes, make no mistake about it.
Eddie Mercks - Belgian Cyclist that won the Tour De France 5 times, the Tour of Italy 5 times, won the profesional road race championships 6 times, won EVERY race on the world cup circuit at least 2 times. Held the world hour record - over 50km (31 miles in one hour) Without a doubt - the best, most perfect physical speciman to be put on this earth - PERIOD!!! Mark Spitz - enough said Bjorn Dhalie - Cross country skiier from Norway - has won more olympic medals and world championship medals than ANY athlete in any sport - summer or winter! Lance Armstrong - current 2 time defending Tour De France Champ. Fully recovered from Testicular/Brain/Lung Cancer. At one point shortly after diagnosis he was given ZERO chance of living Khalid Khannouchi - American marathon runner - current World record holder - 2:05:36 for 26.2 miles. Can any of you run 1 mile at his average pace of 4:45? Dave Scott/Mark Allen - each won the Hawaii Ironman 6 times. Bruce Jenner - enough said Jacki Joyner Kersee - Best woman athlete ever! Do not every tell me that stock car drivers/golfers/bowlers/fishermen or anyother thing like this are athletes. These people are sportsmen and I respect their ablities, but in my mind they are not athletes and shouldn't be put on any "top" list. [This message has been edited by WisChief (edited 12-04-2000).] |
