Yes Pam, and I doubt that your students would be as disciplined or show the academic excellence that Coach Knights do either.

I defend Knight to the end, but he was wrong on this one. He knew the consequences of his actions. Even if his story was true (and probably was considering the source of the accusation), he broke the agreement with Indiana University.
Sorry BK, I hope you do well elsewhere. |

Well actually Kurt, my students are well disciplined and excell in their academics. Most of my students are taking college classes their Junior year.
Thanks Pam |

Pam,
I don't believe that Isaiah Thomas, Keith Smart, or Steve Alford have ever led me to believe they were terrorized. Funny that the only boys who complain about Knight are ones who were removed from his program. In fact, the one who supposedly was choked to submission has turned out to be a blatant liar regarding the specifics of his accusations per the very tape that caught the act. ------------------ Puttin' on my game face! |

Russ-Why are we letting ourselves get caught up in this? We will soon be met with a comment like "keep it in your pants" or a comment about how awful it is to live in such a backward part of the country.

Kurt - I just want to be on record that although I support the decision to fire Knight, it has nothing to do with his past.
He had the rules laid out before him and per his description of events, he broke them. That should be the only bearing on the decision, not what was supposedly done 15 years ago. |

Russ,
I am not aware of all the specifics, I just hate educators that use their position and think they are above the rest of us. I had a teacher once that really ridiculed a student (classmate) It was awful, mean and hateful. That night the student shot himself. Granted he probably had other things driving him as well, but I am positive that being ridiculed that bad in front of all other students played a part. I keep that in my mind and heart each time I step into my classroom. Kurt, I am sorry you are that way. |

Pam - Knight is not an educator, he is a coach. Nothing he has done has made me believe that he thinks he is above anyone.
This particular incident, no matter which side you believe, BK addressed a child who initially acted rudely to him. If a student walked into your classroom and said, "Hey Dawson, how's it going?" would you simply act as if it hadn't occurred? Now in defense of the boy, if his story is true, Knight handled it entirely wrong - for today's new age thinking. If Knight's story is true, then Knight handled it wrong because he was told to NEVER touch another student, and he admitted to touching him. Had he not had the zero tolerance over his head, I would disagree with his expulsion, but he knew the rules, period. Funny thing is the kid who started the altercation is the stepson of the most vocal naysayer on the Bloomington airwaves of BK. How proud his father must be that he has raised such an arrogant, assinine child. If he keeps up the pattern, he can either work with daddy in shock radio or start helping fat boys on the Star create articles. |

The only thing that I would have said was It is Mrs. Dawson or Mrs. D.
But I am probably not as conventional. I hi-five my students and say awesome and way to go always. If that is the whole basis for his (Knights) anger than he needs to get a grip. |

Pam, As I stated earlier, since he broke his agreement, I agree with you and he needs to be dismissed.
However, I believe as a society we are much too lenient with our children today, and it is starting to bite us on our faces. Columbine could not have happened 20 years ago, the boy in Ky who shot his teacher for his early dismissal would not have occurred 15 years ago. Why does it happen today? Because there is no interest in what our children do in their spare time and we actually praise our children for the lack of respect they show to their elders. |

And Russ,
NOt that I want to fight with you, I consider coaches and teachers in the same capacity when it comes to kids. We all have an awesome responsibility and things we do affect lives either in a positive or negative way. I always want kids to look back on their experience with my class as positive. |

The decline in today's youth has nothing to do with what happens in the classroom, it has EVERY thing to do with their upbringing. As teachers nowdays, we are expected to "raise" the kids before we can teach them.
I know all about them being rude and disrespectful. I see my students in the hallways and how they act towards each other and other teachers. We even had to put a clause about disrespect in our handbook... Yes there is a decline in today's youth, but they also have a positive side if one can bring it out. Nothing pleases me more than seeing a kid who sits for weeks without participating suddenly becoming vocal and active because I chose to react by not reacting. Pam stepping off the soapbox now. going to watch Denver win [This message has been edited by dawsonpa (edited 09-10-2000).] |

PAM-I have no idea what you are talking about. I was merely quoting you and bringing to your attention the hypocrisy behind you telling us how wonderful your student are and at other times telling us how backward the people in NW Arkansas are.
I am just very happy to say that my son will never have to school in a public environment that employes twisted individuals like yourself. |
