Urgent Action Needed to Extend Assault Weapons Ban

On September 13, the federal ban on assault weapons, first passed in 1994, will expire unless Congress acts to reauthorize it.
Please contact your Members of Congress to urge them to support legislation to reauthorize the ban on assault weapons. We must make every effort to ensure that our elected officials understand that failure to reauthorize the assault weapons ban is a significant step back for law enforcement and public safety.

You can either:

I always like information so I e-mailed her the following,

I just read your message about contacting my congressman regarding the federal ban on assault weapons. You stated that allowing this ban to lapse would be “a significant step back for law enforcement and public safety.” Can you please provide me with the statistics regarding the significant step forward for law enforcement and public safety that occurred over the lifespan of this bill? I think that I could make a more persuasive argument to my congressman if I could clearly show him that the Ban significantly reduced crime and violence and accidental shootings over the last 10 years. Without being able to show this, I fear I will be unable to persuade my congressman that it is the guns and not the criminals that are the problem.

I hope she doesn't find out about the guy in Texas that has 400 fully automatic AR-15's burried in sealed cannisters!! She might have a conniption!!

Those were illegal before and after this ban, so it doesn't apply.

Sigh. Fully automatic weapons are not illegal in the United States. They can be freely owned under federal law by anyone not otherwise disabled from owning a firearm by federal or local laws and ordinances. There are states and localities where ownership of fully automatic weapons is illegal. But, for example, I, as a resident of Kansas may not posess a fully automatic weapon in the state. But I can posess one that is listed on the NFA registry as a C&R 3/4s of a mile to the east, in Missouri. So, as long as the place of storage allows it, and I'm not disabled from ownership for other means - and I don't haul it over to Kansas, I'm okay. It's legal. I can own it and shoot it. I can drag it through Kansas, too - as long as the place I start from and the place I am taking it to are places posession is legal.

It has been illegal since 1984 to manufacture and sell new full-auto weapons to non-governmental agencies, or contract security firms with government approval - and dealers in Class 3 firearms, with a "CLEO Letter", a letter from a Chief Law Enforcement Officer requesting a demo or similar.

But there is no federal law banning ownership of "Class 3" firearms - only taxing the transfer of same.

All bans on ownership or posession are state and local and not universal.
