It looks like Sam is quite the polygamist... particularly when it comes to Chiefs fans.

No. I don't.

But the media doesn't give a shit about Michael Sam. Frankly, neither do I beyond interest in the social impact of the first openly gay player in the nfl. If Sam didn't want to be the mascot, he could have kept his mouth shut. But the first guy was gonna be the mascot, regardless of what he wanted.

Because agenda, not story

Let's play a game. You're the producer of ESPN and you want to retain as many viewers as possible in round 7 of the NFL draft. What is the most compelling topic to discuss after 8 hours of draft coverage? Not compelling to you personally, but compelling to the masses.

Name your top 3 stories.

I totally get your point. The way it was done though was in bad taste when they started demeaning other DE's who were picked ahead of Sam. Rich actually posted their names and asked why they were drafted instead of Sam. He then went a step farther with it and said, " You mean to tell me that they are all better than Michael Sam?" Clearly he had an agenda to which he was pushing in front of the actual story. Its that agenda that cheapens the issue. Such is the way things are with the media today. ..

He won't.

He's dealing from now on with a constant tug-of-war between a group of people who want him to fail SOLELY because he's a gay and a group of people who want him to succeed ONLY because he's gay.

Like Baby Lee said, very few of these people actually give one crap about Michael Sam.

**** no. But ESPN jumped the shark 10 years ago. This is Standard practice for those goons.

Who here is treating him like a mascot? How is acknowledging the historical importance of what he did given the very real barriers that existed anything another than supporting and acknowledging that bravery?

When he says "stand with Sam" and people retweet that they aren't putting a KC Wolf mascot on him, they're saying that they support his right to live his life on his terms.

Your attempt to turn it into a commodification/bastardiziation of his wishes serves to discredit the act and the individual, and the only logical conclusion one could draw from your desire is to ignore him altogether.

At least you're honest.

For me, he is under no obligation to refrain from an open life, and I am not entitled to use his life as a proxy in cultural discussions if he lives an open life, and I do give a shit about him because he's human being.

But for some, as old school racists justify, the world is like it is and you can't change it by acting differently.

I love you man. You know I do.

Prison Bitch 05-10-2014 06:36 PM

I didn't think most players would care about his orientation. But I'm betting at least a few Rams aren't keen watching him lick cake off his lovers face.

Did it ever occur to you that a benefit of talking about Sam helps us understand the processes of exclusion that we've practiced in the past so that we might be able to learn from them? Not long ago, Sam would have been denied a chance to earn a living playing football based on an inimical aspect of his humanity. Acknowledging the existence of that barrier and discussing its failings is necessary.
