Unless he wants a ridiculous payday, pay the man. SS Howard Berry DJ Branch/Abdullah I won't cry if we lose the rest. |
this staff seems to be capable of finding nobodies or veterans that weren't good on other teams and getting the best out of them.
Sean Smith was terrible on the Dolphins and is why he came so cheap. Kurt Coleman was a bum before he came here and played good here and very good on the Panthers. Ron Parker was a nobody who turned into a very good and versatile secondary player Tyvon Branch was coming off an injury and they got him on a prove it deal where they could limit his snaps and have him play a full season. I think they can do it again and find someone else without overpaying. |

Yeah, I feel like you've extracted your value from the guy now go find the next market inefficiency and go from there

I'm a Smith fan, like his energy, but we need to retain our front 7 and Berry and we can find another younger upside FA or draft choice at CB.
Personally, I won't be surprised if they put Gaines on the outside next year and keep Parker as the nickel. Gaines faired better his rookie year on the outside as he easily kept up with vertical routes with his long speed. He has great potential on the outside. Anyone else remember the SNF against Denver when he repeatedly covered Demaryius/Sanders on verticals? He fits our scheme perfect. I like him to start next year personally. |
Smith's next suspension would be what.....4 games?
|
Resign Berry. Find a safety like Branch or Abdullah or bring one back. Draft a corner sometime or two.
Start Peters, Gaines. Parker moves to slot in nickel. Berry plays all the time. Still would have Nelson, and draft choices or a possible cheaper FA as depth. |
The drop kelce had against sd was on third down. Wasn't easy but should have been caught. The idea that he is easily replaced is quite an exaggeration in an attempt to make a point.
I'm personally torn on Smith. I love how the chiefs have handled stuff and I trust them to replace him if need be. I'm also a big Gaines fan and hate not seeing him develop this year. I would hate to have a big aging contact after all this good work. At the same time, I think he is worth trying to keep if we pull of a few home town deals and he isn't looking to hit it big, which seems unlikely. I think the long term decision says let him go. |
I'll eat the crow if Gaines doesn't turn into a really solid if not great outside corner like many were expecting before the ACL. He's that long corner that we've all been saying the Chiefs need in this scheme, but we look over him due to the injury. Add cheap young depth. But I bet they start him next year if SS leaves.

I wouldn't over pay for Berry, who in my mind is more an inside LB. He's always late in coverage and he's only going to become worse at it. I would rather sign Smith and Howard. I see Hali as only a part time player now, perhaps every other quarter type of player, and not when the game is on the line in the 4th quarter. He's too slow, but he could make a difference in a few games and at the right price that would be value, perhaps essential if Ford just can't cut it. Don't pay him though. Hopefully that frees enough money to get Smith and still try and find more OL help. I want to see the Chiefs draft guard in the first two rounds, or guard and center and move Morse to guard. We are in a great position to win now...fix the OL at all costs, NOW. We'll be glad we did. Guards in the first two picks should deliver quality. Perhaps RT and 1 guard, but two lineman at least. Need another WR in the 3rd...Wilson is too short.

I think replacing dj would be the most difficult when looking purely at roster options. And Wilson is not too short. Another WR would be nice but I don't see it as a necessity over RT, ILB, CB, and even skipping any or all of those if a QBOTF is sitting there in the eyes of management.
Having maclin, kelce, Wilson, and hopefully an improving conley in addition to west/Charles catching passes isn't bad. I definitely don't think adding another conley type is the right move. That leaves a first or second on a WR and in this offense, with other needs on the roster, it's not the right move imo. |
