General question regarding National Anthem (not regarding the kneeling)
Is the National Anthem only played at sporting events? And why is it played at sporting events? I understand when it's played for the gold medal winners at the Olympics, but why is is played at sporting events? Why do I have a hard time thinking of where else I've heard it played?
When someone plays the Blue Jays, is the Canadian National Anthem played as well? |
I've been led to believe the practice is kind of a US/Canada thing. Rest of the world thinks we're a bunch of jingoistic/fascist weirdos for observing the practice.

Started during WWI for a baseball game back when they actually had bands at sporting events.
Evidently it may have been a bit of fluke that they played it during the 7th inning stretch. Fans liked it and it went from there. |
Without it, how would I know which artist has a new album hitting the shelves soon?

I propose it be played at any public entertainment gathering. Little league games, concerts, plays, movies, etc. Anywhere 3 or more people gather, the anthem should first be played to make sure everyone properly respects the country they are in.

Because it is played more at sporting events than anywhere else there are people who think the last two words of the Star Spangled Banner are spoken: Play Ball! :) |

It's played at graduation ceremonies to include university, academy (police and fire) and high school graduations.
