That's on Druckmann.
Believe me, it would literally be impossible to not improve the story by deviating from the game.
They've already deviated from the game in one important scenario already, and it is drastically improved.
Spoiler!
In the game, Tommy and Joel enter the ski lodge with Abby's group, and then they both just casually introduce themselves, and say where they're from, like complete butt ****ing morons. This is how Abby discovers that the guy she's here to kill is right here in front of her. This makes Joel out to be a complete moron, and it is counter to everything that we knew about Joel and his behavior from the first game. It was just an unfathomably stupid betrayal of Joel's character, an illogical decision made simply to further the story, not because it's something that makes sense.
In the show, Tommy isn't even with Joel. Its Dina, and in looking for Joel, Dina is constantly shouting his name trying to find him, and Abby hears this and discovers Joel's identity this way.
It comes off far better than two veterans of the apocalypse just dropping their guard completely and vomiting crucial information about their identity and where they're living to an armed group of complete strangers.
