Had a fantastic time at the game yesterday. Pleasure sharing the row with EyePod and his lovely wife. Also lots of Chiefs fans in our section who were loud and boisterous all game - even with the Ravens Stadium staff telling us to sit down and not be so loud. *yes, really*
Initial thoughts from the game:
1) West is DAMN fast. The second he hit that hole, everyone knew he was gone. Jah Reid and Maclin made some nice downfield blocks for him (I see Sherman did too, but I couldn't see that specific block from my seats.) I still don't have a clue what they called the excessive celebration penalty for, but the run itself was a thing of beauty. It was nice to jump out to an early lead for once.
2) And then we gave it right away. Horrible kickoff coverage, the long pass to Aikens, and then leaving the Ravens fullback completely uncovered is beyond unacceptable. Do these guys not watch film. The Ravens' Fullback has been their go-to guy in situations like that. That took a lot of the air out of our section.
3) Then the fumble recovery! We were watching the scrum and then all of a sudden we realized Branch was running like a man possessed. That play really re-ignited both the team and the crowd behind the bench.
4) Most of the Ravens fans were cool, but there were a few fortified with a bit too much alcohol who wanted to cause issues. Tried to get some of the Chiefs fans ejected because they were using profanity (Yeah, I know - M&T Bank Stadium is a kinder, gentler football stadium.) However, we managed to not only keep our fans, but we got that one idiot ejected because he went racial with his comments - hey, if you're going to pull the "offended card", don't be surprised if it gets used against you.
5) Another Ravens' fan was jawing at Jah Reed and LDT all game. It was actually amusing at times, but Jah shut him down at least twice. He may not be the best RT we could ask for, but he kept his cool and won a lot of personality style points with the crowd. Even the other Ravens' fans were impressed by his comeback.
6) I missed the fake punt because I was prepping a shot of the receivers. By the time I heard the screaming, Koch had already been tackled. Harbaugh is a bit of a gambler, but I'm not sure that was the right time and place for it. Then again, when you're 4-9, I guess any time is a good time to get in some practice.
7) Smith's pass to Maclin was nice. It was a bit behind, but Alex put it in a place I never expected him to throw it. The coverage wasn't bad on it, but Alex winged it in there like, "No big deal". He's really developing a good rapport with Maclin and it shows both on the field and on the sidelines.
8) Santos is a tiny guy - especially standing next to Colquitt. Wow. Yet, he just went out there and booted that 53-yarder through like it was another day in the office. I could imagine the kid having doubts after the past couple of weeks in the monsoons, but we had a feeling just watching him warm up that he was going to be on. Hell, he hit a couple of 60-yarders in warm-ups with lots of room to spare.
9) The less said about the Hail Mary, the better. *sigh* Eric Berry was going for the INT instead of knocking it down and never saw Aikens coming in from the side. Wow, talk about a quiet halftime - that play made us wonder if the usual Chiefs collapse was coming. However, while the third quarter was quiet, the defense tightened up and really got after Claussen. We could feel the Chiefs were thinking, "Not this time."
10) The long drive in the 4th Quarter . . . let's just say, the Ravens' fans who were left in the stadium were very tired of us calling out "And that's a Chieeeeefs.... First Down!" Yeah, it would have been better to have scored a TD, but you could see the expression on Harbaugh's face as we were bleeding clock on that drive.
11) Peters wasn't having a great game until the 4th quarter but that Pick-Six and then the INT to seal the game made up for a multitude of sins. Then when he did the Ray Lewis dance in the end zone...well, let's just say the Chiefs' fans enjoyed it a lot more than the local crowd.
12) The section I was in had a bunch of red and gold clad individuals. When the Ravens did their "Oh!" cheer, we knew we had to respond with the "Home of the Chiefs" at the end of the Anthem. I don't know if you could hear us, but the team did and they gave us several thumbs up after the song was over.
13) Going to take a bit to download and clean up my pics from the game, but I hope to post them here soon. However, if you need photographic evidence Eyepod and I were there, go to the Chiefs homepage and look at the pictures from the game. We were very visible in picture #79 in the second row.
