Romero putting two guys on only for Fernandez to immediately give up a bomb to clear 'em is the most Cardinals moment of the year so far and really the most Marmol thing I've seen in his tenure.

It was just so goddamn predictable.
I had almost this exact conversation with a Mets fan friend during the Sunday sweep on Easter. Are we talking about the same game? It's hard to tell anymore.

And it is all so predictable....

What’s with all the rumors about Arenado to the Yankees?

And now they can’t get shit for reliever they hung on to for whatever reason for this year.

It's a pretty significant problem to have.

It's why they get trades wrong. It's why they pick the wrong guys to send out and the wrong guys to bring in. It's why they put their hopes on the wrong guys and bury dudes they shouldn't bury.

And it's been happening for over a decade.

They can't even internally scout for shit. When you don't even know who among your OWN players is worth a shit, how can you possibly know who's going to be good out of the draft? Or who you should pursue over a 31 organization player pool outside of your own rosters?

Every single thing comes down to the fact that they simply cannot identify talent. And even if they have it RIGHT with Saggese, it begs the question -- why was he your return? And again, even if they have it right, sending him down when he's hitting like this demonstrates that they don't actually have any idea if they do or not.

They're just guessing. It's so damn obvious.

Well at this point its absolute dumb luck but they seem to have found a really good outfield combo and they appear to be sticking to it.

Noot, Walker and Scott seem to be a really good combo though Walker still cant seem to hit for power for shit which is crazy.

If this team could somehow play .500 on the road they're leading the division.

It's not that crazy - his pitch recognition is some of the worst I've ever seen.

I'd have Donovan in the OF with Saggesse at 2b at this point. I'm done with Walker. He hasn't improved in a single area offensively. He won't while he's here. There's just no point in this dance anymore.

Arenado to the Tigers actually makes a ton of sense.

And Helsley would still have a very strong market if we made him available. Likely not much worse than dealing him in the offseason.

We going to get any talent that can be in MLB in 2 years?

For Arenado? No - that's a salary dump. Might get a couple of A ball arms similar to Showalter - some upside but with a 90% probability of never appearing in a single major league game. 3-4 years away in a best case scenario unless it's a Cesar Prieto think where we promote someone just to justify them as part of a return.

For Helsley?

Probably.

One bright spot in the rotation for me has been Liberatore. It's still a small sample size, but compared to previous call ups, things seem to have slowed down for him. His stuff is legit and projects as a solid middle of the rotation innings eater.

I mean he was a high pedigree guy.

I always kinda questioned his ceiling; seemed like he'd be a #2 starter on his best day. Someone who might have one of those Sonny Gray sort of remarkable career seasons but otherwise just be a steady 2/3 arm in a rotation.

Looks like that's about where he's heading at the moment. What's really come into focus is his command. And the fact that he can throw a slider without losing the feel for his curve (which is more rare than you'd think).

He looks good out there. And it looks mostly sustainable. We'll see what happens when the league adjusts, but this is the first real progress we've seen from a young cardinal SP in quite some time.
