Free agency is about six weeks away and the Philadelphia Eagles will have some tough decisions to make this offseason with wide receivers Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper both set to hit free agency this March.
Maclin has previously acknowledged that after missing the entire 2013 season with a torn ACL, odds would be against him landing a big payday with the Eagles or another team in free agency. Maclin said he would be okay with signing a one-year deal to prove that he is healthy and can still perform at a high level.
Only the Eagles know exactly how well Maclin is coming along in his rehab from the torn ACL, which gives them an advantage in contract negotiations. However, with a potentially thin class of wide receivers in this year's free agent market, Maclin may be able to dictate the market and get the type of multiyear deal he is seeking.
The 2014 draft class is loaded with talent at the wide receiver position. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that could affect the way the Eagles approach re-signing Cooper and Maclin. Wide receivers Sammy Watkins of Clemson, Mike Evans of Texas A&M, Marquise Lee of USC, Kelvin Benjamin of Florida State, Allen Robinson of Penn State, Odell Beckham of LSU, and Brandon Cooks of Oregon State are all potential first-round picks. There is even more talent at wide receiver in the second round and beyond, should the Eagles lose Maclin or Cooper and find themselves in need of a replacement.
As it currently stands, the Eagles have $20 million in cap space, but if quarterback Nick Foles keeps playing the way he did this year, they'll have to sign him to a long-term contract, which could mean letting one of their free agent wide receivers walk.

One of the biggest questions the Eagles will have to answer this offseason is whether or not they want to bring back Jeremy Maclin.
Maclin has been vocal about his desire to return to Philadelphia, and on Monday he posted a video showing he is working hard to make it happen.
The below video was posted on Maclin's Instagram account, with the caption: "It's what u do when the lights aren't on u... #18 #realcomebackstory"
It's hard to tell what to make of the video, and how optimistic fans should feel about Maclin's recovery from a torn ACL because of it.
Still, if you are hoping Maclin does return, seeing him sprint in the Eagles practice facility -- and look perfectly healthy while doing it -- likely only increases those wishes. |

DeSean Jackson is angling for a pay raise with three years left on his current contract.
Higher on the Philadelphia Eagles' offseason priority list will be the fate of impending free-agent wide receivers Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper.
Maclin said Monday, via CSN Philly, that he "definitely" wants to return because his " heart is in Philly."
Coming off training-camp ACL surgery, Maclin acknowledged that he might have to accept a one-year contract to rebuild his value.
"I'm a realist, so I understand that's a possibility," Maclin said, per Philadelphia Magazine.
Asked if he would consider giving the Eagles a hometown discount, Maclin replied, "Money isn't everything. I just have to see what's best for me, look at the numbers, look at the personnel and I think we'll make our decision based on that."
Maclin said late last week that he's ahead of schedule in his knee rehab and expects to be ready for spring workouts.
If Maclin returns, there's a good chance he will be joined by Cooper. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is leaving the door open for both players to return.
" I want to be back," Cooper said after Saturday's season-ending loss, via the Philadelphia Daily News. "I love the coaching staff and I feel like I fit in the system here."
Cooper benefited not only from coach Chip Kelly's offense, but also the ascension of Nick Foles at quarterback.
After catching just eight passes for 93 yards and one touchdown from Michael Vick in the first five games of the season, Cooper racked up 45 receptions for 812 yards and eight touchdowns in the final eight games.
Cooper might draw interest from other teams on the heels of a breakout season, but his best career move is to re-sign with the Eagles.

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin is set to become a free agent in the offseason, but he is coming off of a torn ACL and his value may take a hit. It was initially believed that the Eagles would allow him to walk in free agency and Maclin was linked to former head coach Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs, but now there may be a change in plans.
According to CSN Philly, the Eagles are expected to re-sign Maclin to a one-year deal.
Unfortunately for fellow wide receiver Riley Cooper, that means he is likely to be on the outs.

Maclin is a better fit in Chip Kelly’s offense so the news isn’t a big surprise, but the Eagles will still run a risk at losing both Cooper and Maclin in the offseason.

For Eagles free-agent-to-be Jeremy Maclin, a one-year deal is a realistic possibility.
And he knows it.
"I understand it could be a possibility that [the ACL tear] may scare some teams off, or a team may want to do a one-year deal as opposed to a long-term contract," Maclin told CSN's Derrick Gunn in an exclusive interview Monday. "That's the game, that's the business."
Maclin tore the ACL in his right knee at the end of July and didn't play a single snap this season.
But he's still regarded as one of the more intriguing free-agent wide receivers because of his speed, hands, first-round pedigree and the production he gave the Eagles from 2009-12 -- an average of 64 catches, 863 yards and six TDs.
"Both sides have had talks," Maclin said about returning to the Eagles. "I respect [GM] Howie [Roseman]. I understand this is a business, I understand he has to look out for what's best for the organization, and that's what he's supposed to do. I have all the faith that he's going to do what's best for the organization, whether that's deciding to keep me there or moving in another direction. I'm a realist, I understand that's a possibility.
"For a team that wants to give me a one-year deal, that's cool, I'll just go out there and ball out, do the things I think I can do. Hopefully get that type of deal I'm looking for. If a team wants to give me a long-term deal, I'll go out there and still do the same thing."
Eric Decker of the Broncos is the class of the free-agent WR market. Maclin fits into the next tier, with wideouts like Hakeem Nicks, Anquan Boldin, James Jones, Golden Tate, Emmanuel Sanders, Riley Cooper and Julian Edelman.

The Kansas City Chiefs weren’t exactly known for their high-flying offense in 2013. Jamaal Charles had a ridiculous season, but outside of the talented running back, the Chiefs didn’t have many players turning heads on the offensive side of the ball. As the season progressed Andy Reid did open up the playbook a little more, but most of us will remember the 2013 Chiefs for their defense and for the performances by Charles.
So naturally, free agency rumors have already started to swirl in Kansas City. Most fans are wondering who the team will bring in to help boost the offense. A popular name that’s being kicked around the internet? Jeremy Maclin.
The talented WR of course sat out all of 2013 with a torn ACL. However, he’s expected to make a full recovery, as most players with repaired ACLs do these days. He’s also set to hit the free agent market on March 11th, which is why many are connecting the dots and realigning him with Reid in KC.
So the all important questions – (1) should the Chiefs open up their checkbook and pay Maclin? (2) will he want to play there?
The Eagles reportedly want to re-sign Maclin and are also prepared to let Riley Cooper walk in free agency. We’ll have to see who they choose, but you’d have to think they’ll lean towards Maclin, who clearly has a higher ceiling. Philly won’t have enough funds to re-sign both WRs, so it’s entirely possible that the Chiefs could end up with the guy they don’t want. Either way, they’d get a WR that’s familiar with Reid’s system.
If it’s not Maclin or Cooper, it’s got to be someone else for Kansas City. The offense they put on the field in 2013 was simply not Super Bowl-caliber. Until pieces are added, the Chiefs will remain in the tier of potential Wild Card teams. Pursuing Maclin would be a great way to start the process of getting out of that tier.

Receiver draft class may determine Eagles future of Cooper, Maclin

MOBILE, Ala. - The Senior Bowl, once again, was not the place to find wide receivers who will be selected in the first round of the draft.
But buzz had already developed here about a group of underclassmen who could make the 2014 draft the deepest at the receiver position in years. And that could affect how the Eagles approach re-signing Riley Cooper and Jeremy Maclin.
Free agency is more than six weeks away, though, and a poll of coaches, executives, scouts, and agents suggested the Eagles would likely keep both wide receivers. As one NFC executive put it, "Who else will like Cooper as much as Chip [Kelly]?" And as an AFC coach posited, "Only the Eagles know how healthy Maclin is."
The market will ultimately decide the worth of both players, but the Eagles have exclusive rights to re-sign Cooper and Maclin before March 11. The team and each player's representative have already had communication, but the receivers could opt to test the market.
Cooper's value is up for debate. He had a career year filling in for the injured Maclin, catching 47 passes for 835 yards and eight touchdowns. His 17.8 yards per reception was third best in the NFL.
Before 2013, Cooper caught 46 passes for 678 yards and five touchdowns in three seasons, mostly as a fourth or fifth receiver. He said the significant increase in production was due to his taking advantage of an opportunity.
Some have argued - and general manager Howie Roseman could certainly make the same claim in negotiations - that Cooper benefited from Kelly's system. The Eagles head coach, though, has given the majority of credit to the 26-year-old receiver.
Kelly's commitment to Cooper goes beyond his performance. While he admired the receiver's toughness and willingness to block, Kelly appreciated Cooper's response to adversity the most, according to a source close to the coach. Cooper rewarded his coach after he stood behind him when his racial slur threatened to derail Kelly's first season before it even started.
But the Eagles are sure to use the incident as a bargaining chip. In December, one NFL executive told The Inquirer that he would pause before signing Cooper because the addition could disrupt locker-room harmony. But, he added: "Doesn't mean I wouldn't do it."
"It's hard for me to predict how another locker room would handle it," Roseman said last week in Mobile. "I know what kind of player [Cooper] is to be around. . . . He's a very up-front guy. He knows that he made a mistake. He's a guy that we drafted. Had a good year for us. Works really hard. And so, he's a young asset."
Maclin was drafted a year before Cooper, but he's 10 months younger. His resumé is longer, too. He has 165 catches, 1,939 yards, and 13 touchdowns more than Cooper. But Maclin has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee twice - the second time occurring at the start of training camp in July.
He said after the season that he realized he may have to accept a one-year contract to prove his health. The Eagles will have firsthand knowledge of his progress. Maclin will rehab at the NovaCare Complex over the next six weeks.
If he remains unsigned after March 11, any other team would be free to work Maclin out. With a thin free-agent field - the Broncos' Eric Decker, the Giants' Hakeem Nicks, and the Seahawks' Golden Tate are three of the most attractive - Maclin could get a multiyear offer despite the injury.
But the wide-receiver depth in the draft does provide alternatives. Seven receivers, all underclassmen - Sammy Watkins of Clemson, Mike Evans of Texas A&M, Marquise Lee of Southern Cal, Kelvin Benjamin of Florida State, Allen Robinson of Penn State, Odell Beckham of Louisiana State, and Brandon Cooks of Oregon State - could go in the first round.
The talent doesn't end there, though, and the Eagles could look to the later rounds for replacements if either Cooper or Maclin leaves or veteran Jason Avant is waived.
The Eagles have around $20 million in salary-cap space, but they don't have a franchise quarterback contract, and they need to look ahead, especially if their young core improves and the team plans on retaining its own draft picks.
"Can we keep this team together?" Roseman said. "These drafts come around really quickly, so all of sudden, you get there and you go: 'Wow, this guy is going to be [beyond] his third year next year. We want to keep him here.' "
So the Eagles will look to save a buck here and there on their own players, even if they're under contract. And there could be a trade or two, although predraft swapping is hard to pull off. But there likely won't be as much cost-cutting and movement as some expect, judging from the consensus among NFL people during Senior Bowl week.
The Eagles like all three of their tight ends - Brent Celek, Zach Ertz, and James Casey - and just because Celek ($4 million salary) and Casey ($4 million) get raises in 2014, it doesn't mean they won't be back.
Todd Herremans ($3 million) should return at right guard. Inside linebacker DeMeco Ryans ($6.8 million) will likely have to take a pay cut. Outside linebacker Trent Cole ($5 million) could be easier to trade this offseason. Brandon Graham's future as an outside linebacker with the Eagles could depend upon Cole's whereabouts.
The Eagles may want to extend left tackle Jason Peters ($9.65 million), who has one year left on his deal. Cary Williams ($4.75 million) and Bradley Fletcher ($3.275 million) are relatively cheap for starting cornerbacks.
Even though a former coach said free agent Nate Allen's biggest drawback was that he was "afraid to hit," the safety ought to be back, although there are no guarantees. The only Eagles free agent who appeared to be a slam dunk to return was punter Donnie Jones.

With the Philadelphia Eagles season over following a loss to the New Orleans Saints and already wide receiver DeSean Jackson is thinking about a pay raise. Just two years removed from signing a long-term contract extension, Jackson is requesting a new deal because he thinks he deserves it.
Jackson has three years remaining on his five-year deal signed back in 2010. He is set to make $10.5 million in 2014 after making $7 million this year plus some performance bonus cash. Jackson's total deal is worth $50 million, including a $10 million signing bonus and yet, Jackson is not satisfied.
"I definitely feel it's something deserving," Jackson said, via CSNPhilly.com. "We'll see how that plays out, and hopefully we can work things out smoothly and not have to worry about anything out of the ordinary. But I definitely feel like it's deserving. I'm proven in this league, and after this past year, went out there, no distractions, and just really put it all in for my team and went out there and had a lot of success, so we'll see how it goes."
Jackson did have a career-high year after putting up 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns off 82 catches. He finished the regular season ranking ninth in the NFL in both yards and yards after the catch. He is currently the eighth-richest receiver, sitting just behind Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Percy Harvin, Mike Wallace, Dwayne Bowe, Brandon Marshall and Vincent Jackson. While he feels his salary is good, he is hopeful his agent can work out a better extension.
"Honestly, I feel very confident that my agent will work something out," Jackson said. "I feel like I have a great agent, that's what he's for, that's what his job is, all I have to really worry about is staying out of trouble and keeping my nose clean and doing the things I need to do, working on my craft and playing football. I think this year was a big statement for my team and for myself and the things we were able to accomplish and do. I definitely feel it's deserving. Hopefully we can get it worked out and see how it goes."
General manager Howie Roseman did not offer up any comments regarding Jackson's request for a new contract. The Eagles have plenty more to worry about over offering the wide receiver yet another extension. Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin is set to become a free agent. He tore his ACL at the start of the season and is hopeful the Eagles give him a new deal.
"My heart is in Philadelphia," Maclin said. "I would like to stay if I can. We've had talks about the future plans, and stuff like that. I have an idea of what they are thinking."
Receiver Riley Cooper is also due to become a free agent after a strong 2013 season where he showed plenty of chemistry with Nick Foles. Also, quarterback Michael Vick's contract is up which is another issue in itself. |
