Healthy food substitutes

I'm hoping this thread can help those who are trying to better themselves. Please share some healthy food substitutions if you have any. Thank you.

1. Replace mayo and sour cream with plain Greek yogurt. Use Greek yogurt with your tuna, egg salads and chicken salads.

2. Use cauliflower instead of potatoes when wanting mashed potatoes. Steam the cauliflower and blend with a pinch of salt and pepper. Be careful with the butter. Also cauliflower makes a great pizza crust.

3. Try to use jelly instead of syrup and butter when eating pancakes.

4. Use oatmeal as binder instead of breadcrumbs when making meatloaf, hamburgers, meat balls etc etc.

5. Use unsweetened applesauce for a GREAT substitute for butter. Don't knock it until you've tried it. It has the exact same consistency and texture as butter.

Suppose so. Really it's just "no sugar...no grains". When I did this about a year and a half ago I lost about 20 pounds while eating full fat everything. This time around I'm cutting out dairy too (except butter).

Put the weight back on after moving and not having access to all my kitchen stuff.

Now that I'm back on NSNG, I'm down 7 pounds in a week. Ate about 5 steaks last week, tons of veggies, gallons of water and three eggs for breakfast every morning.

Yeah that sounds paleo. Mark Sisson and his site Daily Apple is big on that kind of diet.

As far as I am concerned it's valid for certain metabolic types. I believe in metabolic typing. It's ended the confusion over the constant changing by experts on this diet being better then seeing that change later. It's a more individual approach imo.

I'm a mixed metabolic type per a nutritionist I went to who is into metabolic typing. And it seems right to me.

I do eat fruit. Oranges, blackberries, blueberries, apples all were consumed last week.

So only those naturally occurring sugars. I suppose if I cut those out too and just tried to get nutrients from vitamin C from lemon added to water or something I might go deeper into ketosis, but if I'm dropping a pound a day then I'm calling it a good approach for now.

No diet soda or alcohol either.

Those of you who worry about wheat vs white, simple vs complex carbs, etc should read this. http://www.simplyshredded.com/the-sc...rb-a-carb.html

A carb is a carb.

Maybe for dieting or weight lifting. But not in terms of nutrients which are stripped off in the white. Yeah, they put some back in but not all and no one knows all the other co-factors that nature has that get discovered later. Whole takes longer to digest and so when they convert to sugar they enter the blood stream more slowly for less of a spike.

At first. It's a developed taste like many things. I eat it. However, there are some pasta recipes it doesn't work on like a fettucine alfredo.

I love whole grain pasta. I've gotten used to it. I eat whole grain spelt pastas.

I don't eat a ton of flour or rice, but what I eat is white. I used to eat whole grain a lot.

And you wanna know why I eat white now? Because my nutritionist says I shouldn't eat whole grain with my kidney issues (I have to watch my phosphorus).

Everyone is an individual with different dietary needs. You have a health issue. In general though, it's a good guide. I eat both with a bit more on the whole grain side. Some recipes just don't work with the whole grain. My only issues are my food allergies. Some foods which are quite healthy but I won't get the benefits from them if allergic.

My dad couldn't eat dark leafy greens due to his medicines. In general, though they are healthy and good for most and needed daily.

I even had french fried every day for lunch and still lost weight. I couldn't turn to corn as often as Dane, as I have to rotate any corn as I am sensitive to that even. But it is something I do rely on as a substitute starch or grain. I just limit it.

I really don't know much about sorghum, but I had a large jar of it as a sweetener at one time, that last nearly forever. It's a light brown syrup that's made from it. So I know it's made as a grain sweetener. How they do it is beyond me, but google is your friend here. It's like brown rice sweetener which is another grain based sweetener. Heck, if they can make sweetener from corn for corny syrup don't know why they can't from other grains or plants. None of those are exactly sweet unprocessed either, at least not like a sugar.
OK, I looked it up, and it is condensed sap from cane sorghum. Yeah, I want no part of that production process. Yuck. Sap from grain sorghum is bad enough. I don't have nearly enough heat units (or rainfall for that matter) to make anything like that happen anyway, even under irrigation.

Anyway, thanks for the info. I didn't even know it was on the market.

Read the article. Studies show that there are no differences in a person that is healthy.

Nutrition is not that much difference either. Look at rice for example. Only real differences are that Brown had more magnesium, fiber and sodium.

I disagree with it. It contradicts everything I've learned and read including from trained nutritionists. Including being lower in fiber. No one knows all the natural co-factors in a food less processed and closer to nature. We keep discovering more all the time. In fact, grains weren't much part of our diets for ages.
