how many people have sung this song? I looked it up on Kazaa and it had a ton of really good singers who sang it. So i assume most of them didn't. Anyone know who all sang this?

I don't know who all have sang it, but Waylon Jennings did the best job of anyone singing it.

Eh... I don't know, but your post reminded me of another great song. "Paint it Black" by the Stones.

the Animals version is the one I'd always heard. But Bob Dylan has done a version, Pink Floyd, and a bunch of bluegrass. It's a great song.

I downloaded the pink floyd one on it wasnt really them. The vocals dont sound anything like Floyd and the guitar is way too sloppy to be Gilmour.

The Animals were the 1st if I recall right, then a group called Fridgid Pink did it,after that, take your pick. It has been done by many artists to fill out albums.

How many people on here remember the version of Fridgid Pink ? It wasn't Pink Floyd, who actually did it later in the 70's....Fridgid Pink done it around 1972 - 1973.

That's because the kids that post 'old' songs don't know why did them,
so they guess or take the advise of another unknowing friend.

I see it all the time on Limewire.

Bite your toungue!! (or typing finger, in this case!) No one's version comes even close to the original. Eric Burdon and the Animals rocked.

Having said that, check out the Santa Esmeralda version. Yes, it is from the disco era, BUT it's one grrrreat version. BTW don't get the short version. The 15 minute version is where it's at!

Car speakers in 1970 blasted away with the psychedelic "House of the Rising Sun" by Detroit's Frijid Pink, 4 minutes and 41 seconds of truly classic rock and roll. The single hit #7 on the charts and propelled this, the band's debut album to #11. Follow up singles and lps were much less successful and the band is often written off as one hit wonders, but for those of us who remember their smoking brand of blues-oriented psychedelic rock and roll they were much more. While the original band recorded only two albums, this one and "Defrosted" they left behind a fine legacy of fuzz, wah wah, and other effected guitar work and smokey vocalled rock and roll. Their second album barely dented the charts and subsequent recordings by a band including only original drummer Rich Stevers were even less successful. This lp is a must for those of us who were spellbound by the bands heavy sound are a wonderful opportunity for others to discover a little of the magic of 1970 rock and roll.

I like it as well, I was off 2 years on the song. I was spelling it wrong and have found several copies of the album off of google.

I only want the song.... the extended version, it's a little over 4 minutes long.

The Animals were great, my 2nd favorite, I liked the harder rock version by Frijid Pink.

The Animals is more popular, they had other hits, Frijid Pink was basically a one hit wonder that hit the chats @ # 7 in the fall of 1970, I was a freshman in high school .The Frijid Pink version doesn't ever get played on the radio anymore.

Leadbelly had the first recorded version of the old folk tune in the 1930s and it is still head and shoulders above any other version listed yet on this thread.

Oh, and Floyd did cover the tune. As well as:

Woody Guthrie
Arlo Guthrie
Dolly Parton
Nina Simone (sp?)
Joan Baez
Bob Dylan
Tim Hardin
Peter Paul and Mary
Johnny Halliday
and Alan Lomax
