FOXBORO, Mass. - Cornerback Sam Madison seemed to be fighting back both tears and anger as he talked about the pain of the Dolphins falling to 0-5 on Sunday.
With talk in the locker room swirling about possibly dismantling the team and behind-the-scenes agendas, Madison alternately took shots at management and admitted that trading players such as himself and cornerback Patrick Surtain might be in the team's best interest.
The bottom line was that Madison seemed to hit an emotional extreme after the 24-10 loss to New England.
''It hurts man,'' Madison said. ``It hurts. But I can't do anything about it.
``It's just crazy to me what people are saying about you in the papers. That's not how you run things. It's just tough. We're just going through a tough time. It's coming from the top all the way through the bottom and [the players are] just stuck in the middle.''
IRKED BY CRITICISM
Surtain was angered by a quote that appeared in The Herald last week criticizing his work habits. A member of the organization said Surtain doesn't work out regularly, depending mostly on his ``God-given ability.''
Both Surtain and Madison were upset by the comment.
'Since the beginning of the season, you've heard talk about, `Oh, trade this guy, that guy. He's not taking care of his body,' and it's coming from upstairs? I don't understand that when it's a guy who's really putting out for you week in and week out even if he's hurt. That's crazy. I don't see that anywhere else.''
The NFL trading deadline is Oct. 19 and the Dolphins are in a position which no team in league history has climbed out of to make the playoffs. In 1992, San Diego went from 0-4 to the playoffs.
The Dolphins are not in uncharted territory and sounded discombobulated in the process.
EYE ON FUTURE
That might be why only seconds after criticizing management, Madison admitted that the team might be forced to deal players to rebuild.
''Maybe they need to do what they need to do,'' Madison said. ``They talk about it. I don't know. It just hurts to where you come down here and you make an impact and you do a whole lot of positive things and then it's really not your fault but you're in that mix.
``My love will always be with the Miami Dolphins and for the Miami Dolphins. But if this organization can get turned around by whatever happens, I'm all for it because I don't like this organization to be in a situation like this.''
Similarly, defensive end Jason Taylor said the talk of trading Madison or Surtain upsets him.
''Does it bother me? Yes,'' Taylor said. ``To be honest, I don't want to play with anybody else. [If] those guys aren't here, then I want to be with them. Those are the guys I've fought and played with, and I love them all to death.''
