CHIEFS NOTES

DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE D

When talking about the Falcons, the majority of attention is focused on quarterback Michael Vick, and justifiably so.

However, Atlanta will hit Arrowhead Stadium with the NFL's seventh-ranked defense and top-ranked defense against the run. Atlanta is allowing only 74.5 yards rushing per game thanks in part to an aggressive defensive front that features defensive end Patrick Kerney, who is tied for second in the league with seven sacks.

Atlanta pulled out a 21-20 victory against San Diego on Sunday and held LaDainian Tomlinson to 64 yards rushing in 23 carries.

“This week in particular was a great testament to the work we've put in,” Kerney said.

A LITTLE LEVITY

A potentially difficult situation turned lighthearted Wednesday as the Chiefs entered their locker room and found running back Larry Johnson's locker surrounded by yellow caution tape.

Johnson, who is frustrated by a lack of playing time, had strongly criticized the organization this week. Johnson insisted he and fullback Tony Richardson hatched the idea to try to lighten the mood surrounding the 1-4 Chiefs. It apparently worked; players coming in from practice roared at the joke.

“I told T-Rich to do this. He was poking fun at me anyway,” Johnson said.

INJURY UPDATE

Chiefs defensive tackle Ryan Sims (hamstring) did not practice Wednesday but could practice today and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game. Sims did not play against Jacksonville, but the Chiefs would love to see him return as they prepare to face an Atlanta offense that ranks third in rushing.

Atlanta head coach Jim Mora said defensive tackle Rod Coleman will not play. Coleman suffered shoulder and knee injuries during a car accident Saturday morning and did not play against San Diego.
