Only 1 out and it is 3-0 and man on second. Heck of a start for the Sox.

The way the Cards got their run is the reason why I think that in the long run they will win this series.

Bunt single, walk, sacrifice bunt, sacrifice fly and a run is scored.

Usually the 1B is at the pitcher's mound to pick up any throw that may had shorthopped to throw at 3rd or a pickle play, since the Pitcher is behind the catcher.

Heh, yeah, I know. But it was a horrible throw by Edmonds. Edmonds was lucky that the ball didn't skip away from the catcher, or the runner would had been safe at 2nd. And with the Ortiz hard hit ball, that could had been 10-7

Heck, if Manny had run a little more on the way to first, he could have had second on the throw anyway.

I have noticed that with the Sox, they really don't run the bases well. That is the main reason I think the Cards win the series, they take every advantage available while the Sox rely more on the long ball.

Hydae, I think the small ball genious of Tony LaRussa is probably the most overblown aspect of this series.

The Cards are a speedier team. Yet they outhomered the Bosox on the year. It's not like they're being managed by Whitey Herzog.

Hydrae
10-23-2004, 09:39 PM
But have you watched how lousy the Sox are on the bases? How many times were they caught stealing against the Yankees?

In the first inning of game 7 against the Yankees, Damon was thrown out trying to go home. While heading home, he looked back over his shoulder to see where the ball was. He was thrown out by a whisker. If he had just put his head down and gotten to the plate, he would have been safe. It is basic baseball and I just don't see the Red Sox knowing how to play it. Just by being a National League team the Cards will be better in this aspect, IMHO.

WilliamTheIrish

Yeah, that was an ugly attempt at a slide. That was the main reason he missed the ball so badly, bouncing off the turf instead of sliding along the surface.

I've felt the same thing since the 85 Series. Up 2-0, they were certain it was going to be a sweep. Up 3-1, it was all but over. Up 3-2, it was a sure thing.

Tied 3-3, they quit.

I noticed Clemens seemed shook up around the 5th-6th inning? When he had a guy on base. He fell apart after that. Which surprised me. I thought Clemens of all pitchers, of all those years, should have handled himself in that situation like the pro he is.

Hell of an entertaining game, though. On a night where the Big Three went one-for-ever and the starter got bitchslapped for seven runs, they at least came back and made a game of it.

This will be a tough series. I remains to be seen if the Cards' less-than-steller pitching can survive Boston's bats.

I will say one thing - Boston's defense is just as putrid as I thought it would be. Manny Ramirez in particular is utterly retched in left field. Gotta give them some serious props for overcoming four errors.
