Knowing the Royals we'll get Ellis Burks and call it a "big signing." Or we'll re-sign Al Levine and say the pitching staff now has a anchor.

Realistically, I'd like to have

a 3B: Bill Mueller (BOS)

a LF David Dellucci (TEX)

a RF Jermaine Dye (OAK)

a RHP John Lieber (NYY)

Lieber and Mueller will be resigned, but the other two we might have a shot at.

It's sure hard not to resist bringing Dye back, I hope we make a run at him even though he's not always healthy. That would probably excite me 1000 times more than the Juan Gonzalez junk last year... pretty much because he can play great defense.

Another corner OF that played pretty well but went unnoticed was Todd Hollandsworth... didn't get to play a lot for the Cubs except when Sosa was hurt, but he filled in real well. I bet you could pick him up cheap and he's a left handed bat. I like Danny Bautista of the D-backs too, he's underrated.

Other than that, Bairds needs a third baseman stop-gap until Teahen arrives and pitching. Personally I'd just as soon see us get bullpen help to solidify the bullpen for the guys on the starting staff. There are a ton of pitchers in the organization that they need to start figuring out though, and we've got Darrell May's albatross contract around our necks... I'd just as soon dump him for whatever somebody would give me, otherwise put him in the bullpen. We've got our top four starters in Greinke/Gobble/Hernandez/Anderson... and if they continue to improve from where they finished the season, (knocks on large chunk of wood) we might be in decent shape there.

I'm just sure he'd sign for 2-3 million a year to be back here instead of the 10-18 million/year he'll get elsewhere.

Beltran of course, but I would like to have Dye back. I doubt his price is to high now, plus he had his best years here.

I was just looking at former Royals as free agents:
OF Carlos Beltran
OF Jermaine Dye
OF Tom Goodwin
2B Neifi Perez
SS Rey Sanchez
1B Jose Offerman
C Brent Mayne
DH Chris Stynes

P Glendon Rusch
P Curtis Leskanic
P Jay Witasick
P Chris Hammond

I also think the Royals might take a run at JD Drew, but I think his price will be way too steep for KC. We REALLY need a corner outfielder with some fuggin power.

Is post season, could push that over the 18 mark. Boras is the agent and you know he'll rape to get that that 20/year.

I think Koskie might be a good fit at third and then Dye or Buatista at the corner outfield spot.

Wouldn't it be nice to go after Matt Clement?

Obvious need is a corner outfielder, which is kinda pathetic considering we've lost Damon, Dye, and Beltran. I'd like to see them make a run at Dye, if he can be had on the cheap. If Matt Stairs is starting for us again next year, I predict another 100 losses.

Who are they going to get to be a stop-gap at third though? In my mind, that means "shitty player" until mid-May when Teahan comes up.

I think I posted this before, but I heard Baird on Petro's show a while back. Whenever he pressed him about who he might go after in free agency, he kept dodging the question. Petro asked him if they'd go after a big name like Magglio Ordonez, and he wouldn't directly say no, he'd be way out of price range. It made me think that maybe Glass gave him the go ahead to sign a big name.

Who knows, maybe he'll make a run at Sosa.

Acquired during the season from Kansas City, Beltran has said he would consider re-signing with the Astros if they keep the core of the team together.

"I experienced being on a team where they don't do anything to help the ballclub," Beltran said. "One of my priorities if I stay with this ballclub will be keeping the young guys ... our young players have potential to be real good."
Well **** you too Carolos. 4321

There's money to spend... there's a lot o' ugly contract not coming back between Randa, Gonzalez, and Beltran. If only we could ditch May... Anderson's not cheap either but if he pitches like he did during the 2nd half I can live with him.

Should be an interesting off season, i think we have a chance to be competative with the right signings. It will be nice to have some arms back on the team as well. Should be alot more fun then this year has been, esp with lowered expectations.

I'd almost rather see them wrap up the young guys like Affeldt and Greinke than blow it on free agents at the tail end of their career (Santiago, Gonzalez).

I actually had that written as an extra paragraph but I backspaced it out.....

Interesting notes from Peter Gammons on SportsCenter right now... he says that Beltran had talked to other agents about Gammons doesn't think he'll leave Scott Boras. Gammons said Houston wants to re-sign him, the Astros players think he'll be a Yankee, and Astros management thinks he's going to use the Yankees to get a big deal with the Cubs. Interesting...

If he does end up in New York, I'll officially deam him a money grubbing prick, given how much I heard about how he didn't want to play there.

His offense dropped off horribly though. He was complete dead weight in the lineup for the first half of the season, and still only finished with 8 homers and 56 RBI...didn't hit real well with runners in scoring position, etc. I can't imagine somebody is going to give him 3.5 million in the FA market unless it was somebody like the Red Sox who can blow money on defensive replacements.
