Agreed. Gunther did what G-Rob can't do, force punts when it's needed. If it was G-Rob coaching this year, we'd give up at least 60 points because of 5-6 (don't know how many exactly) punts we focred them this year.

Chiefs-Colts Weekly Recap

By Patrick Herb

In last season’s playoff contest vs. Indianapolis, the Chiefs spent the entire afternoon playing catch-up against the Colts high-flying offense. Kansas City ran out of time in that January affair, but this time the roles were reversed. The Chiefs rattled off 21 straight points in the first half to take the upper hand and this time play with a lead. Indianapolis (4-3) never went away, but couldn’t keep up with the revenge-minded Chiefs (3-4), who pulled off a wild 45-35 upset win.

“It was a pretty special win,” QB Trent Green said from the joyous Chiefs locker room. “If you look at how our defense played in the first half, they put us in a position to get the big lead that we had. In the second half, when they started making a little comeback, the offense stepped up and we were able to put together two big drives to keep that lead big enough that they couldn’t overcome it.” Indianapolis got on the scoreboard first thanks to a pass interference call against the Chiefs that was fiercely debated by the KC sideline. Facing third-and-five from their own 44-yard line, Manning tried to find Harrison on a slant. Just as the ball was getting to the receiver Chiefs CB Eric Warfield appeared to make a great play by reaching around and knocking the ball down. However, the officials called him for pass interference giving the Colts a first down. On the very next play, Manning again went to Harrison for a 52-yard TD pass for a 7-0 lead.

QB Trent Green and the Chiefs answered right back with an efficient six-play, 71 yard scoring drive. Green, who finished the day completing 27 of 34 passes for 389 yards and three TDs, completed all four of his pass attempts on the drive and capped it off with a 21-yard TD strike to TE Tony Gonzalez.

The Chiefs defense then forced a three-and-out and got a 46-yard punt return from WR Dante Hall setting up another Kansas City touchdown. Three plays later on the first snap of the second quarter KC upped its lead to 14-7 when Green threaded a pass to WR Johnnie Morton in the end zone.

Just 5:13 later Kansas City struck again, this time using RB Priest Holmes as the main weapon. Holmes ripped off a 21-yard run early in the drive, then finished the possession with another 21-yard run, this time into the end zone.

You knew Manning and the Colts wouldn’t go away that easily. First, RB Edgerrin James took a screen pass from Manning for a 56-yard gain, breaking tackles all the way down the field. Then on the next play from the Chiefs five-yard line, Manning hooked up with TE Marcus Pollard to cut the margin to 21-14.

The offensive fireworks continued moments later as Holmes again did the damage. Emulating James, Holmes turned a screen pass into a 52-yard gain, then just for good measure, scored on a seven-yard run on the next play for a 28-14 cushion.

Green had a streak of 14 consecutive passes broken when his pass attempt to WR Eddie Kennison was knocked away on what appeared to be pass interference by the Colts. No penalty was called and Kansas City settled for a 32-yard field goal just before halftime.

“We had to win that football game,” head coach Dick Vermeil said afterwards. “It puts us at 3-4 and we go on the road for two weeks. I thought at one time there was no doubt we were going to win the football game and then all of a sudden they come back flying.” Indianapolis used two, three-play drives to “come back flying” in a hurry. Following a Chiefs punt to start the second half, Manning completed three straight passes including a 22-yard scoring strike to Harrison. Then, a solid Chiefs drive ended in a fumbled hold on a field goal attempt and the ball went back to the gunslinger Manning. He again used three plays, and this time found WR Reggie Wayne on a 41-yard TD pass to cut the Chiefs lead to 31-28 late in the third quarter.

Holmes tallied his third rushing score of the contest on what could have been the game’s most critical drive. After two straight Chiefs possessions came up empty, Kansas City needed a score and needed to re-energize the Arrowhead Stadium crowd of 78,312. On the drive, Vermeil’s squad mixed up the run and pass before pounding it in on third-and-goal from the one for a 38-28 lead. Holmes not only put up 225 total yards (143 rushing, 82 receiving), but he also became the franchise’s all-time leader in total yards from scrimmage with 7,583.

The Chiefs and Colts would trade punts before Manning would strike again, going back to Wayne on a six-yard TD pass. After big gains to TE Dallas Clark and Wayne, the Colts faced fourth-and-three from the KC six-yard line. Colts head coach Tony Dungy rolled the dice and went for it on fourth down as Manning completed the quick out to Wayne in the end zone.

Protecting a three point lead with 5:27 remaining, Kansas City did exactly what they needed to do. The Red and Gold took 3:10 off the clock, and better yet scored on a 14-yard TD pass from Green to Gonzalez.

“We had that big lead and you can’t count these guys out,” Gonzalez said after become the second-fast tight end in NFL history to record 500 career catches (118 games). “Any time Peyton Manning’s back there with the great wide receivers that he has on that offense, and the pass protection they were getting, you just get anxious because you know what they are capable of doing. It’s a great win for us and the defense showed up and played really well today.” At this point, Manning was out of miracles. The Colts moved inside Chiefs territory, but S Greg Wesley put the finishing touches on the win when he intercepted Manning in the end zone. That preserved the Chiefs 45-35 lead and signified the end of a game that saw 1,095 total yards of offense by both teams, the third-highest mark in NFL history.

Kansas City looks to even their record at 4-4 next week when they travel to Tampa Bay to take on the Buccaneers.

“We’re gaining momentum,” S Jerome Woods said echoing the sentiments of his teammates. “The key for us, after the loss in Jacksonville, was winning these last two at home. We knew we were in for a tough battle. None of the guys here have given up. We know that we are better than our record indicates. It just shows that there’s a lot of pride in this locker room.”
