I haven't heard much discussion about the Bucs next week. Are the chiefs going to overlook them? I'd hate to see a loss against the bucs after these last two weeks.

I think we match up well against them, their defense is small and fast. our O-line should have their way with them. Plus they can't seem to score points.

So what are your takes on this game?

I don't think this team is going to overlook anybody the rest of the year. They realize the hole they have dug for themselves and are just focusing on their next weeks opponent.

Little Greasey has come in and given the Bucs a little bit of a spark. I hope they don't overlook them..........

If we don't get stupid with our playcalling, we should do OK.

What I worry about is that we start getting cute with the Offense and get out of this good rhythm. Keep pounding with Priest/Blaylock/Johnson and mix in a few passes to keep everyone honest.

Dominate time of possession and limit the D's exposure.

While their offense isnt that good they seem to be puting it together a bit as the season goes on. Pittman has been running stronger as of late and the passing game with Griese is much better than they were the first few weeks with Brad Johnson. Plus Clayton is progressing quickly for a rookie WR. They are capable of moving the ball now.

We should be fine so long as we stick with the running game and not get too creative like we were in the first few weeks.

Brian is gonna be wearing a grass jersey by halftime. I'm not worried about this one. The Bucs will be lucky to get 20 points. That isn't gonna get it done against these Chiefs.

Yeah, Goonther pretty much owned Greasy back in the day.

He's no Manning, that's for sure.

Chiefs vs Buccaneers - Game 8

Nov 01, 2004, 10:55:22 AM by Pete Moris (http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/pete_moris/)

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (3-4)
AT
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (2-5)

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2004 – 12:00 PM (CENTRAL)
RAYMOND JAMES STADIUM – TAMPA, FLORIDATV: CBS Regional Coverage (KCTV-5 in Kansas City) – Gus Johnson and Brent Jones.
RADIO: KCFX-FM (101.1) – Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Bob Gretz and Bill Grigsby.

THE MATCH-UP
The Chiefs will make just their second-ever regular season visit to Raymond James Stadium on Sunday as Kansas City clashes with Tampa Bay. The contest will also mark Dick Vermeil’s first meeting with the Buccaneers since his St. Louis squad defeated Tampa Bay in the ‘99 NFC Championship Game. The Chiefs and Bucs both appear to be hitting their mid-season stride after each club battled through its share of early-season struggles. The Chiefs have won three of their last four contests, including a 45-35 shootout vs. Indianapolis (10/31). The Bucs have been victorious in two of their last three outings. Tampa Bay enjoyed a bye last week following a 19-7 victory vs. Chicago (10/24).KC hopes to sustain the offensive momentum gained in an explosive two-game victory streak. In wins vs. the Falcons and Colts, the Chiefs have registered 101 points and 1,130 yards of total offense. KC became the third team to total 100+ points in a two-game stretch since the AFL-NFL merger and the first to do it since the Raiders had 101 points over a two-game span in 2002. KC’s two-game yardage tally ranks as the fourth-highest mark in NFL history. Last week’s 590 yards of offense ranked as the second-best single-game total in team history.Defensively, KC has also shown glimpses of its dominating past, limiting opposing offenses to just 18.5 ppg over the past four games. KC permitted a season-low 33 rushing yards last week vs. the Colts and has given up just 81.8 rushing ypg in its last five games. The Buccaneers are currently being led by QB Brian Griese, who has guided Tampa Bay to both of its wins in 2004. He came on in relief of an injured Chris Simms in a 20-17 victory at New Orleans (10/10) and started in the club’s victory vs. the Bears. A familiar face to Chiefs fans after serving a five-year stint in Denver (’98-02), Griese compiled a 3-2 record in five starts vs. KC, including wins in his last three outings against the Chiefs. KC travels to New Orleans (11/14) next week, while a trip to Atlanta (11/14) is next up on the schedule for the Buccaneers.

THE SERIES
Kansas City owns a 5-3 edge in its eight previous regular season clashes with Tampa Bay, including wins in four of the last five outings. The Buccaneers snapped a four-game Chiefs winning streak in the series with a 17-10 win in the most recent meeting between the two squads at Raymond James Stadium (11/14/99). Despite forcing six Tampa Bay turnovers, the Chiefs were only able to convert those Bucs miscues into three points.

KC’s last victory in Tampa Bay was the “Joe Bowl” when Hall of Famers QB Joe Montana and RB Marcus Allen made their regular season debuts in Chiefs uniforms as KC collected a 27-3 win on Opening Day (9/5/93). That contest also marked the regular season NFL debut of G Will Shields, whose streak of 183 consecutive games played began in that victory at Tampa Stadium.KC claimed a 28-19 win in its initial meeting with Tampa in ‘76 when the Bucs were a member of the AFC West. The Bucs switched to the NFC Central in ‘77 when Seattle joined KC’s division. Perhaps the most memorable Chiefs-Bucs game came at Tampa Stadium (12/16/79). The game was played in a constant downpour and was deadlocked in a scoreless tie until Bucs K Neil O’Donoghue hit a 19-yard FG to give TB a 3-0 advantage with 8:50 left in regulation. That win clinched the NFC Central for the Bucs, who advanced to the NFC title game vs. the Rams.KC and Tampa Bay have met four times in preseason play with the Bucs holding a 3-1 edge. The Bucs won the last meeting by a 37-14 count at Tampa (8/25/00), while the Chiefs claimed a 17-13 decision in a game played at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK (8/8/98).

THE CHIEFS
Al Saunders is his fourth season as KC’s assistant head coach/offensive coordinator. KC led the league in scoring in both 2002 and 2003. KC is second in 2004 at 29.4 ppg, trailing only IND (31.1 ppg). KC is third in the NFL in total offense (406.1 ypg) and ninth in pass offense (238.6 ypg). The Chiefs lead in the league in rushing at 167.6 ypg and are third in rushing avg. (4.8). KC leads the NFL with 36 rushes of 10+ yards. KC is second in the NFL, averaging 24.3 first downs per game and is fourth in third-down efficiency at 46.7% (43 of 92). KC is second in the NFL with an 75.9 Red Zone TD pct. (22 TDs on 29 Red Zone trips). KC ranks first in the league, converting 70.0% (14 of 20) of its third-down opportunities in the Red Zone. KC averages 3.33 yards per play in the Red Zone to rank fifth in the NFL.

Gunther Cunningham returned to KC as defensive coordinator in 2004, a role he previously held from ‘95-98 when KC allowed an NFL-low 1,050 actual offensive points, a paltry average of just 16.4 ppg. In 2004, KC is allowing 22.1 offensive ppg. The Chiefs have allowed 81.8 rushing ypg in their last five games, a figure that would rank second in the NFL on the season. KC’s defense leads the NFL in avg. yards to go on second down for its opponents at 8.81. The Chiefs are ninth in the NFL, sacking their foes every 13.1 pass plays. KC has racked up 17.0 sacks in 2004 to rank fifth in the AFC. KC is picking off 3.9% of its opponents’ passes to rank sixth in the NFL. CB Eric Warfield is tied for the NFL lead with four INTs, including a 43-yard TD vs. Carolina (9/19). The Chiefs are third in the NFL, forcing 32 negative rushes. KC’s defense is sixth in the NFL on third down at 32.1% (25 of 78) and is tied for 11th in the league, permitting 18.4 first downs per game. The Chiefs are second in the NFL with a 13.2-yard punt return average.

THE BUCCANEERS
Two years removed from a victory in Super Bowl XXXVII, the Buccaneers are 2-5 in 2004. However, Tampa Bay is still powered by a defense that features several Pro Bowl peformers. Three-time Pro Bowl honoree DE Simeon Rice ranked second in the NFL with 15.0 sacks in 2003 and teams with DE Greg Spires, DT Anthony McFarland (D1-99) and DT Chartric Darby on the defensive front. LB Derrick Brooks (D1b-95) has been to seven Pro Bowls and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2002. He teams with one-time Pro Bowl LB Shelton Quarles and former Broncos LB Ian Gold. Pro Bowler Ronde Barber (D3b-97) and Brian Kelly (D2b-98) form a talented corner duo, while Dwight Smith (D3-01) and Jermaine Phillips (D5-02) work at safety.

Former Broncos QB Brian Griese has worked his way in to the starting line-up after QB Brad Johnson opened the first four games of 2004. Former Raiders WR Tim Brown and Joey Galloway were the Bucs Opening Day starters, but injuries have paved the way for rookie WR Michael Clayton (D1-04) to lead the team in receiving (37-505-2 TDs). Former Cardinals RB Michael Pittman is the primary ball carrier, while veteran Ken Dilger works at tight end. Former 49ers LT Derrick Deese anchors an offensive line comprised of former Raiders G Matt Stinchcomb, C John Wade, G Cosey Coleman (D2-00) and T Kenyatta Walker (D1-01). Pro Bowl K Martin Gramatica (D3-99) holds club records for career FGs (137) and points scored (579). Former Packers P Josh Bidwell handles punting duties. CB Torrie Cox (D6-03) leads the NFL with a 28.9-yard KOR average, while Brown returns punts.

The opinions offered in this column do not necessarily reflect those of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Hmm. Denver, Oakland, New Orleans and Washington ran for over 100 on these guys.

Bucs suck on third down offensively. 33/94 on the season.

The only way I get worried is if Saunders comes out and gets cute.......like he's done in the past.

If we stick to OUR game - no prob.....

Glancing over at their board, run defense seems to be an issue, especially since they are a "speed" based defense. Obviously they are much, much better than the Colts but Dungy came from Tampa, so the defense is built with a similar idea in mind. Hopefully the O-line can take it to them... as you can see they allow about 117 a game on the ground and only 148 a game through the air...

They damn well better not overlook ANYBODY. We've got nine games left and can safely only afford to lose ONE OF THEM. Lose two and it's damn long odds (we'd need a full scale implosion from both San Diego and Denver, because 10-6 won't win a wild card berth) - lose three and we're done.

Thanks to that f#cking 1-4 hole, at this point pretty much every game is a playoff game. Take nothing for granted, and beat the hell out of everybody.
