The year I first started following Chiefs football. Carter was a good pick. Krieg was a pretty good pickup. Corey Williams pick was intresting, Lamar Hunt owns a part of the Chicago Bulls and they drafted him as well.

By the 4th year of the Peterson/Schottenheimer regime, the Chiefs had already gone through Jaworski, DeBerg, Pelluer, and Elkins at QB. They brought in Dave Krieg as a stopgap, and after a year in KC, it was apparent that Vlasic was nothing more than a backup. Once again, Peterson reached to acquire a QBotF in Blundin. Making this pick look even worse was the fact that we traded our 3rd and 5th round picks away. The first QB taken in this draft was David Klingler. The next highest ranked was Tommy Maddox, who Peterson coveted (no doubt due to the UCLA connection). But CP seemed to panic when the Broncos surprisingly took Maddox in the first round, and so we traded up to get Blundin. The Cardinals took the immortal Tony Sacca a few picks later. Not a good draft for QB's.

To be honest, there weren't many quality players available at any position in this draft. The Colts took Steve Emtmann and Quentin Coryatt #1 and #2 overall, and both were busts. The first decent player picked was Troy Vincent at #7 overall. Tommy Vardell was the first RB taken. The two picks before Dale Carter in the 1st round were guys named Dana Hall and Troy Smith. Who?

After grabbing Grunhard and Szott in the 1990 draft, Peterson found two more O-line gems in the late rounds of the 1992 draft in Ostroski and Leeuwenburg. Unfortunately, Marty couldn't wait for them to develop, and both players became successful elsewhere.

If you just look at the production that the Chiefs got from this draft, you'd have to say it was pretty bad. Dale Carter played a huge role in getting to the '93 AFC Championship Game, as well as racking up 13-3 seasons in '95 and '97. If not for him, this draft would be ranked down there with the disaster of '91.

It was during this time period that some of our good defensive players were getting old and/or injured and replacements were needed. We needed a new DE to replace Maas, two CB's to replace Ross and Lewis, two safeties to replace Cherry and Burruss, two ILB's to replace Hackett and Snow, and an outside LB to replace Chris Martin. Peterson drafted Mickell to replace Maas, Mincy to replace Cherry, and Carter to replace Ross. Bayless was signed in Plan B to replace Burruss. Tracy Simien and Lonnie Marts were signed as street free agents and ended up replacing Snow and Chris Martin. Joe Phillips was signed off the street and essentially replaced Hackett when Adolph switched to a 4-3. Maas, Hackett, Lewis, Ross, Cherry, and Burruss had all been Pro Bowlers at one time, while only one of their replacements, D. Carter, ever made it.

You cant argue against that Dale Carter pick. He was a stud for our D for his 7 years here. He was actually one of CP's better 1st round picks.
