Players like this are the reason the NBA is not on fire anymore.

I've got to feed my family (http://msn.foxsports.com/story/3138928)

Latrell Sprewell of the Minnesota Timberwolves says he was treated unfairly by a police officer during a traffic stop this week.

Minneapolis police Lt. Lee Edwards said the department's internal affairs unit met with Sprewell and is investigating his charge, the Star Tribune of Minneapolis reported Friday. The Timberwolves' swingman said he had a previous encounter with the same officer, Edwards told the newspaper.
Sprewell received a misdemeanor citation Tuesday after arguing with the officer. He was riding in a vehicle that was stopped in downtown Minneapolis about 6 p.m., and Sprewell spoke up while the driver was being questioned about licensing and insurance.

He was told not to interfere and was ticketed for failing to obey the lawful order of a police officer.

Sprewell was given a form on Wednesday to detail his allegations. He also has the option of giving an oral statement at the police department. Edwards said he hadn't received the report or any indication that Sprewell intends to give a statement, according to the newspaper.

The 34-year-old Sprewell recently demanded that the Timberwolves either extend his contract or trade him, saying he was "insulted" by the club's last contract offer of $10 million per season for the next three years. "I've got my family to feed," he said, comments that drew criticism from NBA commissioner David Stern.

Sprewell will make $14.6 million this season in the final year of his deal.

They (the NBA) need to learn to tell their players to shut their asses.

I think David Stern is a good commissioner, I'd take him over Tagliabue in a second. He responded pretty quickly to it, said he might take action against Sprewell if he doesn't apologize...

``I think it's corrosive,'' Stern said. ``I think that a few players that spotlight themselves as being so individualistic that they are threatening not to play as hard as they can are walking right up to the edge, and if they step over it, I'll do what I have to. Enough is enough. Players do nothing for the league if they are viewed as unhappy with their nine-figured contracts.''

The contract offer of 10mil per was really generous for a 34yr old SG. He has lost a step too.

So are people like Ty Law why the NFL isn't "on fire" anymore?

I thought you would pick up on that line.

BTW - Ty is one player out of 53. Spreewell, Bryant, O'Neal, and dozens of others in the NBA are making their comments and having to live with them.

Yeah I could be biased about it... there's no doubt the NBA or MLB or NHL has an image problem compared to the NFL, but I don't think that's because of Tags, more because the owners have built a quality competition system so everybody gets excited about the game, when in reality there's just as much drug use and prima donna crap going on that nobody pays as much attention to. I guess maybe in that sense Tags does a good job keeping things under the rug, except on those occasions where you have some deal like Plummer putting a sticker on his helmet and causing an uproar...

Yeah, in the NFL this week all we had was one the best offensive players on the only undefeated team in the league calling the best defensive player in the league a murderer that might belong in prison and having drama-central through the media. That's so much better than making cracks about having to feed your family... :)

I hadn't heard, and you are right, it is more vulgar than Spree's gimme gimme attitude.

But at the same time, the NFL is not suffering in ratings and cash - they can afford idiot comments (no, it's not right, but it is a fact). Spreewell is doing nothing but hurting an already damaged league.

I don't disagree with that, the NBA needs all the good pub it can get, which is why Stern is quickly becoming a hardass.. I guess players were upset over officiating being tighter and Stern's official stance on it was pretty much "Shut up and play"... he realizes the league can't start sliding much further.

But yeah, T.O. and Ray Ray seem to be having a good time...

Owens said Wednesday he received several “hate” e-mails through his Web site from people asking how he can embarrass Ray Lewis by imitating Lewis’ dance after Owens scored a touchdown in Sunday’s 15-10 victory over Baltimore.

“It’s discouraging at times that I get labeled and put in that same mold and that I’m the worst guy that ever put on a uniform,” Owens said. “It’s funny. I listen to all the comments and it baffles me.

“You have a guy like Ray Lewis, who I thought he was pretty much my friend. This is a guy, double murder case, and he could have been in jail, but it seems like the league embraces a guy like that. But I’m going out scoring touchdowns and having fun, but I’m the bad guy.”

God, what an idiot...IMO dude shouldnt even be playin in the league still after what he did to Carlisimo a few years ago. What an utterly insulting thing to say, especially when "Joe six-pack" is living off of $8.50 an hour and helping to pay his salary by buying tickets to see him play....unbelievable!!

I read in the paper that at the game after his comments, he was booed when he was introduced, and whenever he touched the ball........until he sank two 3-pointers in the second half.

But there were signs ("Will play for food"), and some talk of having a canned food drive for him.

So if he doesn't like what was offered, I am sure someone else would be happy to earn that paycheck. Let's see how long he can feed his family flipping burgers for a living.

Somtimes I just can not believe the arrogance of professional athletes. You would think they would realize that the spoon in their mouth is made of silver and is not rusty in any way shape or form.
