Draft (Chiefs alternated drafting in the 18th and 19th slots of each round)

1) traded for Joe Montana (Vikings took Robert Smith with the 21st pick)

2) used in 1992 supplemental draft to select Darren Mickell (had 13.5 sacks and 19 starts in 4 years with KC; Darrin Smith, LB, was taken 6 picks after the Chiefs slot and Ray Buchanon was taken 17 picks after the Chiefs slot)

3) Will Shields (great pick, future Hall of Famer; John Lynch was taken 8 picks later)

4) Jaime Fields, LB (played a key role in ’93 playoff victory vs. Houston, was a disappointment after that, only playing two years in the NFL, was killed in a hit-and-run accident while driving home on his 29th birthday; Mark Brunell was taken 15 picks after his college teammate)

5) Lindsay Knapp, OG (played one game for the Chiefs; Doug Evans, CB, Richie Anderson, FB, and Chidi Ahanotu, DE, were all taken in the next 15 picks)

6) Darius Turner, FB (never played in the NFL; Frank Wycheck was taken with the next pick, also taken within the next 11 picks were: Willie Williams, CB, Chris Dalman, a 4 year O-line starter with the 49ers, Corbin Lacina, OL, Barry Minter, LB, and Michael McCrary, DE)

7) Danan Hughes (not a bad 7th round pick, stuck around as a reserve WR/special teamer for several years; Brock Marion, Jeff Blackshear, Troy Brown, and Craig Hentrich were taken in the 14 picks after Hughes)

8) No pick; among the last 11 picks in the 8th round were Blaine Bishop, Elvis Grbac, and Trent Green

Not a bad year in the FA market... Allen was a good pick up, Siglar helped some at times, McDaniels served as a solid backup...

With the trade for Montana, we really didn't need too many big name FA pick-ups...

Shields was a great pick, Hughes was alright...

There's a couple of names on that defense that don't ring a bell, but wow... Smith, Big Dan, Phillips (not great...but solid), and DT... Simien was solid, that was still when Carter was good... Lewis, Ross...

Allen was past his prime (though he still had a few nice years in him) and the wideouts were mediocre...but between Montana's leadership and that defense...no wonder why we made it to the AFC championship game...

Now imagine if you could have that defense out there today...just think of what Gunther could do... But if its and buts were candy and nuts...

After the '92 playoff shellacking, Marty decided he was sick of smashmouth football, so offensive coordinator Joe Pendry and running backs Christian Okoye and Barry Word were let go. Paul Hackett was brought in to install the West-coast offense that Montana had been so successful in. Marcus Allen and Harvey Williams were dual threats as runners and receivers. Former lead blocker Bill Jones was let go and Kimble Anders won the starting FB job because of his receiving ability.

This would've been a good year to find our QBotF, but timing screwed us over again. We had just drafted Blundin in the 2nd round the year before, and we used our '93 first round pick on Montana, so Peterson was not going to use another draft pick on a QB that year.

I find it amazing that the Chiefs went to the AFC championship game in '93 with our 3 starting LB's all acquired as street free agents.

Was the '93 draft a success? Tough call. Montana got us to the AFC championship game but only lasted 2 years. The only player who really panned out from that draft around the 18 slot was Robert Smith, and we wouldn't have taken a RB anyway since we had just drafted Harvey Williams two years earlier.

Mickell wasn't a real good 2nd round pick. Had he started for about 6-7 years, this would've been a great draft. Shields was a great pick.
So I would say the '93 draft wasn't as good as '89 or '90, but it was better than '91 and '92.

UFA losses: Bill Maas, Jayice Pearson

I wish FOX and the Chiefs TV would do the same. Cut them.

Yep, Will Shieds and Tony G is about the only thing King Carl has ever done right in the draft.
