----------
Jason Baker will be the third player in as many weeks to handle kickoffs for the Colts.
The Fort Wayne Wayne High School product has been signed to the active roster for the express purpose of kicking off against Houston on Sunday in the RCA Dome. He replaces Smith, who replaced place-kicker Mike Vanderjagt.
"I'm just going to come in here and hit the ball as well as I can and hopefully that adds up to something that's better than what's been going on," said Baker, who resides in Carmel, Ind.
Baker has kicked previously with San Francisco, Philadelphia and Kansas City. He spent the 2003 season with the Chiefs, averaging 39.5 yards on 80 punts. Baker also kicked off, producing six touchbacks and delivering 57 of his 92 kickoffs inside the 10-yard line.
Not surprisingly, Vanderjagt has low expectations for the team's newest specialist.
"I'm not the GM. I don't control roster spots," he said. "If that's their decision, knock yourself out, have a good time with it.
"But it's not going to help our team kick off any better by having Jason Baker here."
To make room on the active roster for Baker, the team placed linebacker Keyon Whiteside on the injured reserve list.
