One thought, there have been a few threads on lately that have required the participants to do a search. The "what is the best thread you've started thread" comes to mind, but there have been others. Could it be that the extra searches that are associated with these types of threads are the real problem? Could we leave search enabled if everyone agrees to limit themselves to "occasional" searches?
