Draft (the Chiefs drafted anywhere from the 24th slot to the 29th slot of the 1994 draft):

1) Greg Hill (drafted with the 25th overall pick, it’s been debated whether he just sucked or got screwed by Marty, in any event, didn’t produce like a 1st rounder; Isaac Bruce was taken 8 picks later)

2) Donnell Bennett (led team in rushing a couple years but generally not a fan favorite, especially when his average yards per rush dropped to 0.9 in 2000; Jason Sehorn taken with the next pick after Bennett, Vaughn Parker, a solid OT for the Chargers, was taken 5 picks after Bennett)

3a) Lake Dawson (started 26 games and had 103 catches in 4 seasons; nobody better was taken in the next 35 picks)

3b) Chris Penn (did nothing his first two years, then exploded for 49 catches in 16 starts in ’96, then traded to Bears; nobody better was taken in the next 35 picks)

Concerning Greg Hill. It was a little bit of both. He got screwed by marty, but he also wasnt very good. He didnt have very good balance and was tenative to hit the hole. When he did hit the hole, every so often, he did have some nice explosion. He was however a very nice turf runner. much better on turf than on grass. That year he played in St Louis, 1998 I believe, he had some nice games for Vermeil before he had that injury.

Only thing noteworthy about this draft is that once again, we were looking for a potential QBotF, RBotF, and WRotF. Two years after Blundin was picked, CP realized he wasn't the answer and took a flyer on Steve Matthews. Peterson also hoped that either Hill or Bennett would eventually be able to take over at RB for Marcus. And Dawson and Penn were expected to eventually replace Willie Davis and J.J. Birden, which they did, for a year or two. None of these offensive picks were good enough, and adding to the problem is the fact that Peterson was ignoring our defense. You can see that more and more street free agents were making bigger contributions on the defensive side of the ball. I'm not complaining about that, but it masks the draft deficiencies. Marty didn't have a problem bringing in guys from the outside to plug in, whereas DV has avoided doing that at all costs. He talks about improving from within, which is tough to do if you're not drafting well.

Let's not give Greg too much credit. He was fast and if the stars aligned properly he could break off a long run. But, he was not a good NFL running back, he couldn't read blocks to save his life, he hit the hole to fast -- way before the play developed. He was best suited to running sweeps on the outside ( the stuff that works great in college but doesn't fly in the pros because the lbs are too fast). Bottom line for our offense at the time ball control smash mouth football Hill was a terrible pick. He was a 1st rounder who at best could have served as a change of pace back.

This might have been one of Petersons worst drafts ever. Not one of these guys contributed much. I guess you coud argue that Hill and Dawson did for awhile, but thats not saying much.
