Cheek keeps punting job

The Kansas City Star

The Chiefs worked out former Denver punter/kickoff specialist Micah Knorr following practice Saturday afternoon but made a decision not to sign him.

The Chiefs decided to stay with current punter Steve Cheek, who struggled badly at Oakland last week and ranks last among AFC punters with a 31.1 net average, was at practice Saturday.

“We just wanted to bring him in and get a look at him,” Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said of Knorr. “We know that he has a great leg because he had a heck of a game against us in the opener.”

After watching Micah Knorr punt, Dick Vermeil cried and was heard saying to Carl, "I just can't do it. Cheeks is my boy, Carl. Cheeks is my boy!"

I will never understand why the Chiefs gave up a 7th round draft pick for Cheek! He was going to be cut, and if someone else picked him up they could have looked else where. Punters like him are available as free agent all the time. I hope Cheek works out. But regardless, giving up a draft pick for him was crazy.

You just know a guy named Micah isn't going to be a "profile" guy.

My maiden name was Cheek, and that is not a common name, I wonder if I am kin to Steve :hmmm:

By trading for him, we got him under contract. Otherwise, we might have had to complete with some other team to get him. Remember, he was tearing it up in the preseason, and everyone then thought it was a great deal.

I'm thinking though that we maybe should have traded a 2nd round pick for him. Those haven't been working out too well for us of late and it definitely would have saved Lamar some $$$.

So what if you got him under contract? He was a free agent who had been cut numerous times. Yes, he had a good preseason, but there was much more history to look at. All I was saying is you knew you would be able to pick up Cheek or someone like him without giving up anything.

No way did everyone think it was a good deal. It was stupid from the get go IMO. Some regarded it as ok and some like me thought it was a totally waste of a draft pick as it has been.
