Edgar Renteria signed a four-year $40 million contract with the Red Sox today, giving Boston an All-Star shortstop.

"The biggest reason was that Boston is a traditional team," Renteria said from his home in Colombia. "They won the Series this year and I like to play on a winning team like Boston, St. Louis or any team that has the opportunity to win."

Renteria, who played for St. Louis last season, is a 4-time All-Star, 2-time Gold Glove winner. He has a career average of .289.

St. Louis lost to Boston in four games in the World Series, and Renteria made the last out, grounding out to Keith Foulke. "I played with them for six years but finally we didn't come t an accord."

A nine-year veteran, Renteria was one of the prime free agents on the market. His decision came down to Boston and St. Louis. "It (Boston's offer) was more generous. They were more interested in my playing for them."

The Red Sox offer also includes an option for a fifth year.

It's not on ESPN.com, mlb.com, or stltoday.com yet, so I'll hold back the tears for right now.

Funny that Boston had to raise their offer to $40 mil just to get him interested, when the Cards were only offering $32 mil.

If they manage to snag Matt Clement, then I give them a fair shot at repeating even without Pedro.

We offered 4 @15 each for Nomar, or $60M. Nomar is a better bat but his fielding is beyond spotty.

Renteria is less of a highlight reel guy, but he is consistently excellent. He's also extremely durable and not a liability in the lineup to say the least. At 29 years of age, I think 4 @10 is pretty reasonable.

(caveat -- all baseball salaries are insane).

Compared to what the Mets just gave Pedro, it's a bargin.

Around midnight (Central time) last night there was word on the radio that the St. LaRussa's were jumping in late on the Pedro sweepstakes. Offering 50 mil and all.

Has Pedro officially signed?

I think he still has to pass the physical, which he is refusing to allow them to take an MRI of his shoulder.

He agreed to the MRI. He's taking the physical right now in NY according to WFAN.

That's good. Now they will see that his shoulder is about 75% torn apart.

I'm sure Boston still would want him back now that David Wells is your tenative opening day starter.
