View Full Version : Most overrated...

The Sporting News this week ran a story on the NFL's most overrated team, at least according to eight NFL scouts — one from each division.

On offense: Lions quarterback Joey Harrington, 49ers running back Kevan Barlow, Bucs fullback Mike Alstott, Cowboys wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, Falcons wide receiver Peerless Price and Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey. The overrated line was Jets center Kevin Mawae, guards Ruben Brown (Bears) and Damien Woody (Lions), and tackles Chris Samuels (Redskins) and Luke Petitgout (Giants).

On defense: defensive linemen Marcellus Wiley (Cowboys), Grant Wistrom (Seahawks), Chris Hovan (Vikings), Warren Sapp (Raiders); linebackers Brian Urlacher (Bears), LaVar Arrington (Redskins), Zach Thomas (Dolphins); defensive backs Charles Woodson (Raiders), Dre' Bly (Lions), Tebucky Jones (Saints) and John Lynch (Broncos).

Good to see Hovan and Woodson on there.

I remember last year at the Chiefs-Bears game Boozer kept yelling, "Brian Bosworth!" whenever Urlacher did something.

While very funny, it's hardly accurate. The dude is good for 100 tackles, 5 sacks and an INT every year. He can tackle, cover and rush the passer... a really good MLB. You'd be hard pressed to find many better in the league (Ray Lewis is the only obvious one IMO)

Arrington and Brown are the only two real surprise for me on that list. Maybe Barlow too, since I think he's pretty good and doesn't get that much press.

I would agree that Alstott is overrated, but I still think he's pretty darn good.

Harrington is the most overrated QB in the NFL? A third-year player with a 15:8 TD:INT ratio this year, virtually NO supporting cast on offense, and little to no national acclaim? There's not one single QB in the league who's more overrated than him?

I saw something on ESPN the other day about Lovie Smith's reaction to this naming Ulracher in there. He was not happy, to say the least. I don't blame him. That was pretty stupid.

My guess is that he's on this list because he's a white guy. MLB is kind of a skill position on defense and he's not supposed to be a great athlete because he's white.

Perhaps they are including injuries, so the return on investment is really low.

Firmly disagree.

1. Can't stay healthy.

2. Doesn't shed blocks too well.

What he is is pretty fast and a solid tackler. But he plays soft and can't shed tackles.

I'd take ALL of these guys ahead of him:

1. Ray Lewis
2. Tedy Bruschi (most underrated LB in the NFL)
3. Al Wilson
4. Zach Thomas
5. Keith Brooking

There might be one or two more, but I'd really prefer a tough, hard-nosed ILB/MLB who doesn't spent half the year out with injuries than Urlacher.

Once the Bears lost the big beefy DTs to keep offensive linemen off him, he hasn't done much of anything exciting.

Most overated QB by far

Bruschi?

Homer. The thing Teddy has going for him is smarts.

Brooking I agree with. I'd still take Urlacher over the rest of those guys. (I'd be happy to have any of 'em, FWIW)

I agree with this more so than Vick.

I know I have already posted this but I can't say enough about Hovan's being on this list. I have always thought he wasn't as good as advertised.

But....but.... Hovan wears scary makeup for games! That makes him uber elite, doesn't it?

Kevin Mawae is a damn good center.

Harrington is overrated.

He threw for 49 yards last week. 49 yards against a pass defense that gave up over 800 yards in the previous 2 weeks.

The guy has some weapons too. Roy Williams is pretty good and Kevin Jones has come into his own lately.

He was the 3rd pick 2 years ago and I haven't seen anything from him to say he's lived up to any hype.

Pretty good? I'd kill to have that guy on the Chiefs :D

Who cares about the '"overrated team." Tell me about the under-rated players. I want to check that list against the '05 FAs.

This list was complied from scouts and PR guys around the NFL. Maybe he is thought highly of in NFL circles.

Smart, fearless, never gets hurt, great leader on defense, great enthusiasm for the game, terrific instincts. Other than that...

Comparison of years 2000 (when Urlacher came into the NFL) through 2004:

Bruschi: 71 games, 9 forced fumbles, 9 INTs (for 4 TDs), 34 passes defensed, 2 fumble recoveries

Urlacher: 73 games, 6 forced fumbles, 7 INTs (for 0 TDs), 31 passes defensed, 5 fumble recoveries.

I freely admit I'm cherry picking stats to a degree. Urlacher's tackles and sack totals are higher, mainly because of the fundamental differences in how they are utilized by their coaches, and between the 3-4 and 4-3 schemes. ILBs rarely blitz in the Patriots scheme.

I agree. I have no idea how he is "overrated". He's top 3 in the NFL...

Damien Woody is a very good guard, although his current contract (highest priced guard in the NFL) is too much $$.
