There are some strange ones out there. I nominate the Arkansas Tech Wonderboys.

Haha, hilarious. And the women are the Cotton Blossoms. I couldn't find a pic of the mascot though. I'll bet it's funny.

The "MIT Engineers" makes me chuckle every time I think about it. It's just so literal, and so pathetic...

I've heard that the nickname of Nebraska before the Cornhuskers was the "Bugeaters".

Not sure if it is true though.

What were the Nebraska Cornhuskers called before they became the Cornhuskers?
"The Nebraska football teams of the 1890's were called the Bugeaters in honor of the insect eating bullbat, a wide mouthed nocturnal bird which fed off the grasshoppers infesting the Nebraska plains"

Wasn't there a Nike commercial a few months back that made fun of a town whose school nickname was the Nimrods?

In Illinois, there's a town called Teutopolis and their high school nickname is the Wooden Shoes. No kidding.

I dig the Boll Weevils and the Banana Slugs...and the Wonderboys (in Russellville, Ark).
I used to cover the Hickman HS (Columbia, MO) Kewpies. Perhaps the most disturbing mascot of all time!!

Hickman Mills High school, the Kewpies.

Nothing like being named after a crappy carnival prize.

I always crack up when I see a team named "The Spartans"

Yeah, the Spartans were the baddest military dudes of Ancient Greece. But, the Spartans systematically encouraged their troops to engage in gay sex because they believed it made troops less likely to break formation in combat if there was a strong personal connection between the troops.

I know, it sounds rather unbelieveable...but its true. So now think about schools that talk about "The Spartan Way" and how can you not laugh?

I've got a buddy who teaches at Longwood University. There is nothing really orginal about their mascot, but the University and mascot combo is priceless:

The Longwood Lancers

Dr. Freud would approve, I think . . .

You beat me to it. We used to play them when I was in high school and always made fun of their name. Plus, they ususally suck for being such a large school.
