Nice philosophy: find good in bad...

The 2004 Chiefs set or tied NFL records in the following areas:

* KC’s 398 first downs were the most in NFL history, breaking the NFL record of 387 set by the ‘84 Dolphins.
* KC’s 63 rushing TDs in 2003-04 tied as the best two-year total in NFL history, matching the NFL record originally set by the ‘61-62 Packers.
* The 2004 Chiefs were the first team in NFL history to:
* Produce eight rushing TDs in a single game, getting four apiece from RB Priest Holmes and RB Derrick Blaylock in a 56-10 win vs. Atlanta (10/24).
* Score 56 points in a game without a TD pass, doing it in a 56-10 win vs. Atlanta (10/24).
* Have three different players record a 150-yard rushing game in a single season. RB Priest Holmes – 151 at Denver (9/12), RB Derrick Blaylock – 186 at New Orleans (11/14) and RB Larry Johnson – 151 vs. Denver (12/19).

The 2004 Chiefs were the first team in franchise history to:

* Lead the NFL in total offense, averaging 418.4 yards per game.
* Rank in the NFL’s top five in each of the four major offensive categories: scoring offense (2nd – 30.2 ppg), total offense (1st – 418.4 ypg), pass offense (4th – 275.4 ypg) and rush offense (5th – 143.1 ypg).
* Have two players with active receiving streaks of 50 games or more – TE Tony Gonzalez (68 games) and WR Eddie Kennison (51 games).
* Have three different players with eight or more rushing TDs – RB Priest Holmes (14), RB Larry Johnson (9) and RB Derrick Blaylock (8).

Summary: our offense was really good.

(No surprise there.)

Oh no. I forgot to add these...

# DE Jared Allen produced 9.0 sacks, the second-highest total by a rookie in Chiefs history. Only LB Derrick Thomas (10.0 in ‘89) had more.

# LB Monty Beisel started games at two different linebacker positions and produced a career-high 2.5 sacks.

# DT Lional Dalton produced a career-high 4.0 sacks.

I like being optimistic and all but all the achievements aren't worth a hill of beans with a defense as bad as the Chiefs have had for 3 years straight.

Good points. Allen was certainly a bright spot. I didn't mean to be a party pooper. It was an entertaining season, to be sure. I love this offense, and I loved what I saw from Allen. I don't think that Beisel's 2.5 sacks is something to write home about and Dalton started the season better than he finished it, but still.

There are good things to be found, for sure -- it's just that wins aren't one of them, and in the end, that's all that really matters.

These actually made me giggle:

# The Chiefs defense led the NFL by forcing opponents to go an average distance of 8.72 yards on second down.

# The Chiefs defense permitted 114.6 rushing ypg, a 31.9-yard improvement from 2003.

# The Chiefs defense was second in the NFL, allowing just 37.9% of opponents’ first-down rushing plays to go for four or more yards.

# The Chiefs defense was fifth in the NFL, forcing 105 negative plays.

# The Chiefs defense was ninth in the NFL with 40.0 sacks, the club’s best total since 2000.

# The Chiefs defense returned an opponents’ turnover for a TD for the 16th consecutive season.

Which they did almost 100% of the time.

What meatpacker produced these stats? It sounds almost like DV's propoganda.

...Failed to make the playoffs.

...Failed in the opportunity to advance once in the playoffs.

...Failed to make an AFC Championship Game appearance.

...Failed to make a Superbowl appearance.

...Failed to WIN a Superbowl.

Does any of the the other stats really matter? I enjoyed "the Show" just as much as anyone. But, all this offensive output got us EXACTLY (well, not quite) where we were with Martyball. No Superbowl appearance or win.
