Hackett resigns from the Jets.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- New York Jets offensive coordinator Paul Hackett resigned Wednesday, ending a four-year stint marred by criticism for his conservative play-calling.

Paul Hackett oversaw an offense that was ranked 17th in the league in scoring.

The move was expected after the Jets' 20-17 overtime loss to Pittsburgh in the second round of the playoffs Saturday.

Jets head coach Herman Edwards "and I agreed that the time was right to move in another direction," Hackett said in a statement. "There are other opportunities that I would like to explore. I leave knowing that I've worked extremely hard and had a hand in the organization's recent success."

The Jets showed little imagination in their version of the West Coast offense, ranking 17th in the NFL in scoring this season even though Curtis Martin led the league in rushing with 1,697 yards.

Chad Pennington threw for 2,673 yards and only 16 touchdowns, while the Jets ranked 22nd in passing yards and managed 51 points in the first quarter during the regular season.

Once Pennington returned from a strained right rotator cuff in December, Hackett went even more conservative. The tight ends were virtually invisible in the offense, and playmaker Santana Moss was hardly used after a breakout 1,000-yard season.

Perhaps most upsetting to team officials was the lack of offensive scoring in four games against Pittsburgh and New England, where they managed a total of two touchdowns.

"The biggest negative is not being able to score enough points in those games," general manager Terry Bradway said Tuesday. "You can go back, and find out that there were probably a bunch of plays that were left on the field."

Hackett started losing his supporters midway through the season. Edwards never gave his longtime friend a ringing endorsement, while Pennington would only say that he supported any decision Edwards made on the coordinator's future.

Even when Hackett tried to mix things up, it failed. One play that will be remembered from the regular season is LaMont Jordan's pass with the Jets leading the Ravens 14-0 late in the first half. Ed Reed intercepted in the end zone, Baltimore gained momentum and eventually won 20-17 in overtime.

"Looking at what we need to do to move forward, Paul recognized that a change needed to be made for a number of different reasons," Edwards said in a statement.

Hackett joined the Jets after serving as head coach at Southern California from 1998 to 2000. He was also head coach at Pittsburgh before taking over as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach in Kansas City from 1993 to 1997.

Among those thought to be candidates to replace Hackett are Chiefs QBs coach Jason Verduzco and Saints offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy, whose contract is up.

Man, that place really is Chiefs East.

Well, Verduzco is going to NY no matter what.

I guess I wasn't paying enough attention. But has anyone noticed the Rams woeful STs? Woefull all season. Worst in the league. Let the Jets back into the game. Gave up another TD against the Falcons. Then I saw a sideline shot. Mike Stock, STs coach!!!! ROFL ROFL ROFL

Maybe he should be a defensive coordinator, he's been as responisible for stopping good offenses as any defense has.

If the Chiefs were not so pathetic I would have really felt sorry for the Jets fans having to deal with Hackett. Why on Earth would any interview the OC from the Saints? The QB never really improved, they continues to under utilize one of the better RB's in the league and they were as inconsistent at producing as possible...

With the Jets defense, Pennington at QB, and the year C-Mart managed to put together they should have scored a helluva lot more pts this year...

Jet fan here. While Pennington was shaky, your conclusion is correct.

Even with that horrific offensive showng against Pitt, it took a 'Marty-ball-esque' moment to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

If Verduzco leaves for NY, then I would like to see Geep Chryst get the QB Coaching job for the Chiefs.

One question tho, since Shea has already been hired as the TE coach, can they move him back to QB coach and bring in someone else to coach TEs?

I'd say that's very likely.

This is really disappointing. I want Hackett to be coaching other teams.

Hey, is there any chance Marty would hire him back? That would be awesome.

No! No Tampa Bay! I want him in the AFC, and preferably with an opponent in our division.

Mike Stock, too. Marty! Stock will be available soon. Snatch him up!

I can't believe Gruden is stupid enough to even consider it.

Pewter Report's Scott Reynolds and Jim Flynn and WDAE's Steve Duemig are reporting that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have hired former Oakland Raiders offensive line coach Aaron Kromer and will hire former New York Jets offensive coordinator Paul Hackett today to serve as offensive assistants.

It's is truly astounding to me that the NFL keeps recycling these coaches who are confirmed death for their teams. No team will ever win a Super Bowl with Hackett on their staff. It's not a prediction. It's not a supposition. It's a fact. Why can they not see that?

I guess the Bucs needed a replacement Offensive Water Distribution Specialist.

You never know who to believe when you visit other BBs. But according to someone over there, Gruden was an assistant under Hackett at the college level
