The corn isn't very good on the road, but they have a few guys to watch out for. McCray and Turik mostly. They have a bunch of big guys that can also shoot the 3 . Other than that, their inside game isn't very good. :KU: should dispatch them easily at AFH.

Bobby Hurley -- 1076

Miles has... 850 or so?? Averaging 7 a game..... cracking 1000 would be really cool.

I just checked and they arent showing this game in St. Joe. Think the Minsky's on Barry road would be covering it? or where else is a good spot in the northland to ctahc the game/ maybe a bar or something.

Minsky's probably would (nothing else on  ).... I'm sure 54th Street on Barry Road would be showing it, too.

I knew I saw something in the Star about it.....

This is from yesterday's.... guess 850 was a little high...

MILES MOVING UP: With 829 career assists, Miles now ranks 20th on the NCAA's all-time list. Miles, who is averaging seven a game this season, is trying to become the fourth player in NCAA history to tally more than 1,000 assists. He broke Jacque Vaughn's school record of 804 on Jan. 1.

I don't dispute that they are bad, but against baylor that just doesn't sound right. Heck in the second half against KU weren't they only down by one point before KU made a run?

Baylor is actually improving. IIRC I read that they just matched their win total from last year. Next year they have a HELL of a recruiting class coming in.

so you're going to be the first to complain when KU wins a national championship in an ugly game? I'll take an ugly win any day of the week over a loss. KU gets everybodys best shot, its not fair to ask them to be on every single night. No one goes perfect these days and so far Kansas is, even though some of the games aren't. Felton got into foul trouble early the 1st half, plus the game was at Wake..... the difference in that game.

Wake got beat last night by Florida State........

Illini is not as good as the critics are saying, just like KU....

I don't buy that...... Illinois was ranked 7, 8, or 9th, maybe 11th to start the season.

KU sneaked by a couple of teams as Illinois moved up due to some other top 10 teams falling.

Wake plays a bad game at Illinois after illinois moves up to # 3 as Wake is # 1. Leap frog right to the top.

Most critics didn't have Illinois in the top 7 or 8 to start with.... it's because of the gaurd play, they are great, but if they go out, they are average to marginal than most teams.

Every team out there you can make a case for, pros and cons, either way......

No. 2 Kansas 59, Nebraska 57

Jan. 19, 2005
SportsLine.com wire reports

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Wayne Simien scored all 12 of his points in the second half and No. 2 Kansas remained unbeaten Wednesday night with a shaky and sloppy 59-57 victory over Nebraska.

The Cornhuskers went for the win and not the tie on their final shot. Corey Simms put up a 3-pointer with 2.6 seconds left but missed, and Alex Galindo hugged the rebound to his chest as the buzzer sounded.

The Jayhawks (14-0, 4-0 Big 12) trailed by three points at halftime, made only 13 of 28 foul shots and were outrebounded 43-36.

Simien, the only Big 12 player averaging a double-double, sat down with two fouls less than four minutes into the first half and did not have a point or a rebound when the Cornhuskers (8-6, 2-2) went into halftime with a surprising 24-21 lead.

But then Simien had five points and five rebounds in a 10-0 run to start the second half and it looked as if the Jayhawks were on their way to the easy victory most of the sellout crowd expected.

But the Huskers lead the Big 12 in scoring defense at 58.8 points per game and played like it, holding the Jayhawks almost 20 points below their season average.

Keith Langford, who did not have a field goal in the first half, made it 51-45 Kansas with a pair of free throws with 4:40 to go, but freshman Joe McCray scored the next eight points for Nebraska, and the Jayhawks could not put the underdogs away.

McCray had 19 points and Wes Wilkinson 16 for Nebraska, which shot only 32 percent against the tight Kansas defense.

Langford and J.R. Giddens each scored nine for Kansas, and Aaron Miles and Galindo had eight.

McCray worked inside for a basket that made it 58-57, then Miles hit one of two free throws to give the Jayhawks a 59-57 lead with 24.3 seconds to go.

The Jayhawks, back at home after three straight road games, missed their first eight shots and trailed 24-21 when Giddens missed a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer.

With Simien on the bench and Langford in the locker room after hobbling away, Galindo kept the Jayhawks from falling into an even deeper hole in the first half when he hit two 3-pointers and a layup in an 8-0 surge.

Nebraska then outscored the Jayhawks 10-5 the final few minutes of the half.

He's no Denny Trease...I can tell you that. Somehow, the guy always calls the championship seasons. He called the '85 Royals...he called the '88 Jayhawks...and apparently he called the UK Wildcats before the Royals when they won a championship or two under Joe B. Hall. Probably too old for many to remember...but a local team needs to bring him back to KC.

KU this year plays up/down to their competition. They remind me of Ohio State football when they won the national title a few years ago. Great D, but just enough offense to win, not blowing anyone out. They make it interesting. It remains to be seen if this style translates to a basketball national title.

While I agree that the close games will serve them better in the tourney than blowouts, I still think they need to put away crappy teams like Nebraska, especially at home. Having said that, I refuse to doubt them again. I doubted them versus Georgia Tech, I doubted them versus Kentucky. I even had reservations going into Iowa State. It does say something that you can play that poorly and still win. The bench definitely won this game.

Exactly. Obviously, they have their problems on offense, but like JoPo said today in the Star, their defense is good enough to get away with sleepwalking through a random conference game in the middle of January. I don't like the Big10+1 style of offense, but I really like the toughness on defense.

Despite what Self said last year, everyone knew this style was coming to KU... after peaking at the right time last year, I have faith that they can get it done in March this year.

Well, I didn't mean to come off sounding harsh. I just think that we're all getting a little too panicked about this. Despite what the pessimist wants to think, KU is 14-0. Comparing them to the Chiefs is not fair, IMO. KU is winning by playing solid ball. Sure, their offense struggles at times. But they step up and make plays when they need to and that's the sign of a championship team.

Like Bearcat said, I don't care for the style of offense that Self has brought but, I do love the tough, physical defense. We haven't seen a defense this good at KU in a lot of years. We all know that guys like Simien, Langford, and even Miles can score. The young guys are still getting the grasp with different guys in and out of the lineup. But I'm thinking they will eventually settle into a rotation.

Frankly, I think the game last night should not have been that close. That guy on Nebraska got a lot of cheap calls to go his way. The refs were dumb enough to not know they were being used. And the game probably would not have been that close if KU would've been hitting their FTs. They struggled badly at the line last night. That part is a bit disappointing. Espcecially since it seemed that they had been working on that the last few games. :(

I still have faith that this team can go deep into the tourney. :)

I do as well, KU is still seaching for the right mix of players on the floor at different intervals during the game. The freshmen have got to step up more. They are getting plenty of play now which is good, it's the only way to get ahold of the style of play Selfs wants out of them.

What pisses me off about last nights game is out of control the veteran players play. Missed FT's, lack of rebounding, fouls, temper, and lack of focus. It was an all around disappointment.

Credit Nebraska with a gutty effort, but the lack of focus by KU last night was the biggest reason this game was close.

My question to all is this, Will the players remember this and improve
from a lack of focus effort or Do you think they will brush it off since they won ?

Do you think a loss would have made them focus more than a shallow win over a weaker team ?

Last night's performanced sucked........ Did the players over look Nebraska at home, looking forwards to Villanova ?

Bearcat
01-20-2005, 10:10 AM
Yeah, it doesn't matter what style they play, they can't keep getting out-rebounded every game. I know Simien's absence and last night's foul trouble was part of the problem, but they have to get better.

The comparison to the Chiefs is unfair, because we're talking about struggles on different sides of the ball. Defense wins championships ;)
