Player Profile

Erasmus James

School: Wisconsin
Position: Defensive End
Class: Senior
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 263lbs
Birthday: 11/4/82
40 Time: 4.72 (estimated)

Positives

- Possesses a big, thick lower body for a defensive end. Is quick off the ball and shows a real burst when turning the corner. Flashes speed and power when rushing the quarterback. Is having an outstanding senior season.

Weaknesses

- Is only an average player against the run. Can find the quarterback but lacks awareness when defending the run. Missed the 2003 season due to a hip injury.

Overall Analysis

- Erasmus James began the 2004 season as a huge question mark, but he now is looking like a solid day one prospect after a spectacular start to his senior season. James arrived at Wisconsin as a partial qualifier in 2000 and did not play. He played in 12 games (1 start) in 2001 and posted 6 sacks, and played in 14 games (13 starts) in 2002 and posted 4 sacks. Unfortunately, James suffered a hip injury prior to the 2003 season that shelved him for the entire year. At one point James’ football career was in question, but he successfully rehabilitated the hip after seeing a specialist. So far the rehabilitation appears to be a success as James has caused havoc for every quarterback who has lined up opposite the Badger defense in 2004. James has good size and a big, thick lower body for a defensive end. He has good pass-rush moves, and can be effective with the bull-rush or with speed around the corner. But while James has shown awesome ability as a pass-rusher, his play against the run leaves a bit to be desired. James can hold the point of attack against the run, but occasionally he will have trouble locating the ball and needs to show more awareness on the football field. And while he seems to be completely back from the hip injury, some teams might have a medical red flag on him due to the past problem. As of now James carries a solid second round grade, but he has an outside shot of being a first round pick if he continues to play well and the question about his hip turns into a non-issue.

===============================

Eric Green

School:Virginia Tech

Ht Wt Spd Position
6.0 198 4.49 CB

2004: 31 TKL, 1.5 TFL, 1 INT, 5 PBU, 1 QBH.

By Robert Bryant

Green enters the season with seven career interceptions; with three interception last season, returning two for touchdowns. Eric's is also a threat on special teams where he has blocked four kicks. He is very experienced and saw action at cornerback in 23 of 24 games during his first two seasons at Tech. He was in the running for a starting job at corner when he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee prior to the start of 2002 preseason practice. He was inconsistent at times last season, but found himself pressed into action as a true freshman in 2000 due to injuries at the cornerback position. He ended up starting five games, playing nearly 400 defensive plays and was named second-team Freshman All-America by The Sporting News after the season. Green's knee appears to be fully healed, he had a strong game in the 2004 season opener, helping to shut down USC's young recievers. He seems to have finaly stayed healthy for his senior season and has a chance to emerge as a serious NFL prospect.

I don't like either of the picks.

Plus GBN sucks.

Why would we take a DE [since Hicks and Allen are the clear and present starters] with CB Marlin Jackson [a position where a rookie could actually get onto the field] still on the board?

Because Hicks is a waste of flesh...

Because Hicks is a waste of flesh...

That is not the point. The staff LOVES Hicks. Just listen to any press conference. He WILL be the starting DE next season. Like it or not, that is how it is.

Once you accept that fact and look at our CBs, the choice is clear.

Unless, of course, you are not on the “our window is closing” bandwagon and are preparing for the dismantle and rebuild in 2006…

Gaz
Expects a LB or CB in the 1st Round.

No I'm firmly on the "window is closed, locked, nailed and painted shut" bandwagon. I don't care what dick(head)vermiel says about hicks every TE* in the league agrees hicks sucks...

*If you're a starting DE in the league and can't get past a TE, well you suck!

I still fail to see the logic here.

Whether we like it or not, Hicks is beloved by the Chiefs staff and will be the starting DE next season. Given that fact, why draft another DE who will not see the field? We need CB help immediately and Jackson could probably be our nickel back on day one.

A DE makes no sense in this scenario.

xoxo~
Gaz
Would like to have a good DE, but realizes Hicks is firmly anchored.

I see where you're coming from but the only DB's I draft ahead of Pollack would be Rolle and Rogers. But I don't think one corner rights our ship so thats where we differ.

Gaz
01-23-2005, 12:39 PM
No, one CB does not right our ship. We need two.

A FA CB to start and a draft CB for the nickel. Personally, I think OLB would be a better choice for the 1st Rounder, but there will not be a spongeworthy MLB or OLB there when we pick. At that point, I default to my secondary need of CB.

I know it is hard, but you have to come to terms with Hicks and Allen as our starters.

Gaz has a point.

Drafting a DE would likely be a waste...he won't see the field over Vermeil's pet Hicks...

We need to concentrate on CB and OLB in the draft, while concentrating on CB and MLB in free agency.

I have seen a mock draft that has LB Johnson falling within our grasp.

Not gonna happen, of course, but it is nice to dream, ennit?

Yea two CB's two LB's and at least one safety. I wouldn't complain abut just getting two corners for next year but it's still just a start and the D would still suck.

The one site that I saw was NFL Draft Countdown. They had him going 16th.

The one thing I would say about that -- NFL DC absolutely nailed the 1st round last year, up to about 20 or so when all the trades started going down...

Gaz

The crucial issue is whether or not you agree that we are in the last year of our “window.” With the age of some of our players and the introduction of a new regime in 2006, I find myself in the unusual position of being on the “blow our wad in the off-season” bandwagon.

If you concur with that perspective, then DE is a foolish choice.

If you are building for the future, then DE is as good a choice as any.

We don’t need a Safety. We lose Woods and replace him with Harts [per Gaz] or Pile [per htismaqe].

MLB, OLB, CB, CB.

xoxo~
Gaz
Does not think a major overhaul of the D is required.

Well I'd be ok with the "blow the wad" angle but CP aint gonna do it. We would need to make a big splash with lotsa cash. This is why I'm planning for the future. This same team with two new starting corners IMO 7-9 maybe 8-8.

I pretty much think CP and DV have ruled this out, which is why I am in the gut and rebuild camp.

I agree with CB in the 1st and LBer in the 2nd. Along with CB in FA. A safety other than Crouch in the 3rd would work as well.

I think we might see quite a bit of wad-blowing by the Chiefs this off season. This is Vermeil’s last hurrah. And Vermeil was the guy Peterson wanted to captain the ship. I believe that Peterson will spend some serious cash to give Gunther the players he needs to give Vermeil a legitimate playoff team.
