Well, we may not own them this year, but the precedence is in tact. 21 straight visits to Manhattan @ Bramlage and their previous digs.

Unbelievable streak... one of the most impressive streaks in all of college basketball. To repeatedly OWN your instate rival 21 times in a row on THEIR home court is utterly embarrassing.

Hopefully for you, they beat KU tonight. Hopefully for all of the smart fans in Crimson and Blue, that doesnt happen... at least not this year. Although, Im beginning to pity you.

:ksu: prepare for your yearly @home thrashing.

heh.

K-State may have found a star in Jeremiah Massey. But will he matter against KU and its Big Three of Miles, Langford and Simien?

By Gary Bedore, Assistant Sports Editor

Wednesday, February 9, 2005

Manhattan — Tonight, for the first time in a long time, the men's basketball teams of Kansas University and Kansas State each will have all-Big 12 Conference candidates on the floor.

Kansas State, which hasn't had a first-team all-league player since Elliot Hatcher in 1996 -- that's right, in the old Big Eight -- has a bona fide contender in Jeremiah Massey.

The senior forward takes a 17.3 scoring and 6.4 rebounding average for KSU (13-6 overall, 3-5 Big 12) into tonight's game against the Wayne Simien/Keith Langford/Aaron Miles-led Jayhawks (18-1, 8-0).

Tip is 8:05 p.m. with a live telecast on channels 13 and 38 (Sunflower Broadband Channel 15).

"He can play. He's definitely all-Big 12," Oklahoma State's Joey Graham said after Massey had 25 points and eight boards in a 77-57 Cowboys victory Feb. 2 in Stillwater, Okla. "His physicality surprised me. He got in there and banged, and he can finish plays."

Massey, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound senior from Detroit, will not take the Jayhawks by surprise.

"I think he is one of the most underrated players, and he is one of the most productive in our league," KU coach Bill Self said. "He's shooting 50 percent from the field. He gets fouled a ton. He's hard to guard. He can face it and drive so well. He's tough, a really good player."

This season, Massey has shot 50 percent from the field and 80.8 percent from the free-throw line.

Kansas University's Aaron Miles, Keith Langford and Wayne Simien each are legitimate all-Big 12 Conference players. But so is Kansas State's Jeremiah Massey, above, who averages 17.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

"I've watched him play on TV. He's good," KU sophomore J.R. Giddens said. "We will have a hard time matching up."

One of the Jayhawks who likely will guard Massey equally is respectful.

"Massey is playing very well. You can say we have to work on guarding him," junior Christian Moody said. "He'll be a big focus for us."

One of the Jayhawks who won't be guarding Massey knows the Wildcat well.

"I know Massey from working camps with him this summer. He's cool. He's good," said KU junior guard Jeff Hawkins, who worked Washburn coach Bob Chipman's camps with Massey.

He's not the Wildcats' only threat.

KSU has shot 40.3 percent from three-point range, including 41.7 percent in Big 12 games. Cartier Martin has made 30 of 60 and Lance Harris 30 of 73, while Fred Peete has cashed 26 of 73 and Clent Stewart 18 of 52.

"They were 47 percent in conference play until their last game," Self said of KSU's disappointing 70-60 home loss to the Buffs.

"They didn't shoot well against Colorado. They've got three guys in the game all the time that can stretch the defense and have a guy in the post as good as anybody in the league drawing numbers."

That guy is Massey, who is wary of the Jayhawks after KU has reeled off 21 straight victories in Manhattan and 28 overall against K-State.

"They are a good team, just like everybody else in the Big 12," Massey said after Saturday's loss to CU. "It'll take us playing our kind of basketball. We've got to come out and play hard-nosed ball the way we've done all year."

Of the streak, he said: "I don't even pay attention to that. I just come out every night and play basketball."

The Wildcats' thoughts about the game have been kept to themselves since Saturday. The KSU players have been off-limits to the media.

"I don't every remember doing that (before). I just want them focused on going to school and preparing to play this game," KSU coach Jim Wooldridge said. "I just want them a little more focused on getting prepared to play the game. I don't know that they have anything that they can say that would make a big difference to the public right now, and I just decided I'd take care of all the public statements."

Bumps: C.J. Giles (bruised foot) and Alex Galindo (groin) each practiced Tuesday but are listed as "doubtful" for tonight.

KSU's Marcus Hayden has missed the last two games because of migraine headaches and has not practiced this week.

"He hasn't practiced enough and is not in a position where we can play him right now," Wooldridge said.

Sellout crowd: Tonight's game is a sellout, KSU's first since the 2002-03 season when capacity crowds packed Bramlage Coliseum for games against Texas Tech and KU.

"That's the loudest I've ever played here in Bramlage Coliseum," sophomore guard Lance Harris said of last year's 78-70 loss to KU in Manhattan. "It's a big game, a rival game. But it's more than just a rival game to us, because our backs are against the wall and we need the ‘W' bad."

He was asked if this year's team was more equipped to beat KU.

"I believe so," Harris said. "We have more talent and our players are being a lot more aggressive, so I think we will have a good chance."

Job in jeopardy?: Wooldridge was asked Tuesday about his job status, which he and K-State athletic director Tim Weiser have discussed.

"I don't think we need go into detail right now about what Tim and I talked about," Wooldridge said. "To sum it up, improvement and overall improvement of the program and more success and better attendance and all the things we want out of this program. Tim and I are very much on the same page with expectations and improvement and success and what all that means.

"I think that would be fair to say that in these next eight ballgames we need to show success and that these young kids are getting better and there is a base underneath the program and the team that can grow as time goes on."

KU may use zone tonight

By Kevin Haskin
The Capital-Journal

MANHATTAN -- For many basketball coaches, playing zone defense is like wearing jeans to church and hoping the preacher doesn't ask about it.

"We play zone a total of three minutes in '05 and now we're going to make a story out of it. That's great," chided Tim Jankovich, the Kansas assistant who prodded Bill Self into breaking out the 3-2 zone recently.

A brief switch caused problems for Missouri, then slowed the momentum Nebraska was building in the first half on Saturday.

In each of those last two games the No. 3 Jayhawks eventually triumphed by double digits.

They stand 18-1 overall and 8-0 in the Big 12 entering an 8 p.m. game tonight against Kansas State (13-6, 3-5) in Bramlage Coliseum. KU has never lost in Bramlage, has won 21 straight in Manhattan and 28 straight in the series.

As for any zone looks tonight, well, guess what defense caused the Wildcats fits in their last game, a startling 70-60 homecourt loss to Colorado.

Yessir, a 2-3 zone. The Cats couldn't shoot over the top, misfiring on 20 of 26 bombs from 3-point range.

"I could see us playing some zone. It's certainly helped us the last two games," KU coach Bill Self said. "We haven't played it much, but it's disrupted rhythm and made for longer possessions, which if you have a lead that's pretty important."

Whenever Self talks about his zone, he usually provides a disclaimer.

He states that the defense KU plays will always be based on man principles. Just 5 to 10 minutes of practice is ever spent meddling with the 3-2, said Self, who also notes problems the Jayhawks have rebounding out of the zone.

"It's good to do it every now and then and take a team out of its rhythm," said KU point guard Aaron Miles. "Being active is the key. Just because you're in a zone doesn't mean you can rest in a zone."

Frankly, the Jayhawks need to be good mano-a-mano tonight.

The 3-point bricks K-State stacked against Colorado were probably an aberration, though a zone is worth trying against the Cats as one method for corralling talented senior forward Jeremiah Massey.

"I think they're much improved. Certainly they've shot the ball great," Self said. "That's one game out of how many where they didn't shoot it well because they're shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc for the year and in conference play."

If KU is compelled to play a little zone, the look won't confuse longtime K-State fans, who recall the 3-2 played by Jack Hartman's teams.

Jankovich, a former Wildcat, remembers, too.

"This (KU defense) is similar, but I don't know if it's exactly the same," Jankovich said. "The 3-pointer has changed things so much. Zoning was a lot different than it is now, because you have to protect the 3-point line. Having the guy at the top be active and understanding everything around him, that's the key spot."

J.R. Giddens and Keith Langford share that responsibility for KU and -- arms extended -- try to disrupt whatever they can.

"I like being on the side of the zone, because most of the shooters are on the side," said the 6-foot-5 Giddens. "Out on the top spot, you're kind of blind and have to depend on people communicating, but I also like to direct traffic. So if that's the key spot, I say, 'Sure, coach.' "

As for the best Jankovich ever saw play out top, that's easy.

"Rolando (Blackman). He was terrific," Jankovich said of the former K-State All-American. "But then he was good at whatever he did."

Zone may or may not work against us, depending on how are shooters are doing. Lance Harris, Fred Peete, and Cartier Martin (if he isn't playing the post) can and will shoot the trey.

Simien doesn't worry me too much in this game. I'm very worried about Miles and Giddens from the outside. Thats been the downfall of us all season, getting pushed around in a screen, and allowing the trey.

No doubt... Duke/UNC should be awesome. Plus, it's on HDTV :D

Mr. Laz
02-09-2005, 12:32 PM
the mildcats actually have a chance this time around IMO because of their size.

the 'Hawks have size issues ... Simien is listed at 6'9" and i think he's closer to 6'7" and Moody plays small.

the mildcats play a 3 forward setup and can eventually wear down the 'Hawks if they keep pounding it down low.

moody - a defensive weakness against a legit big man

simien - the harder he works on defense, the less he has on offense

Kaun - can get him in foul trouble pretty easy

Giles - even if he plays, can foul out in under 5 minutes

niang - decent defensively, but major issue on offense

Giddens - at 6'5" forcing him to play defense against a legit forward is a problem.

darnell jackson - million dollar body, 10 cent head? (could be just a frosh thing)

mildcats need to pound it down low over and over again ... even if they fall behind. In the 2nd half they may just win by default.

I think Duke is overmatched, personally. I think UNC will win that one running away.

12 Fred Peete G 6-4 200 So. 13.4 ppg., 4.9 rpg.

15 Jeremiah Massey F 6-7 220 Sr. 17.3 ppg., 6.4 rpg.

20 Cartier Martin F 6-7 220 So. 11.1 ppg., 5.3 rpg.

55 Tyler Hughes F 6-11 240 So. 2.9 ppg., 3.1 rpg.

I would guess that your shooters won't be doing as well tonight as they are normally accustomed. KU is the top team in the Big 12 in FG % defense. Plus, that 3-2 zone is a little different than the typical zone teams see (2-3). I don't care much for the zone myself unless it's just used as changeup from time to time. KU will mainly play man up defense and make KSU work for those shots.

02-09-2005, 12:40 PM
Well, I'm a KU fan who moved to Manhattan this year. This is what I know about tonight's game:

- I expect KU to win big.
- But still, KSU is improving and I'm more worried about losing to them this year than most others.
- If KSU does pull off the upset, it will be okay, because Aggieville will be jumpin' tonight. :)

Like I said in another thread, the media has such a short attention span between what is entertaining and what wins championships.... it's happened with the Colts the past few years, and for now in CBB it's UNC. There's no way this UNC team is as talented as some of the KU teams that didn't win it all. Of course, it doesn't mean UNC can't win it all, but I think their time would be much better spent mentioning the other teams in the top 10-15 every once in a while.

I had a really hard time trying not to flip over to Duke/UNC, even though I was recording it.... it was a pretty decent atmosphere at Allen West last night. I missed KSU's second big run though..... KU was up ~15, flipped to the other game, came back and KU was up 6

That was supposed to say ESPN has been kissing their ass all season.

Flipped it over to ESPN at 6 to set up recording Duke/UNC, and Dick Vitale is on... the first question I hear is "Who would win, Illinois or UNC?"

:banghead:

What is this, the BCS? Well, too bad UNC, you were just knocked out of the championship game. :p

In previous games, Redick kind of reminded me of Hinrich (maybe because he's a white guy with black hair  ), but tonight he was certainly not.... selfish, greed... I dunno, but a few of those shots were just uncalled for. They should have lost the game, and it would have been his fault.

BUT, it was great to see the game end on a defensive stand. Look, ESPN, if a team can get back on defense and at least slow down the transition game, they have good chance of beating a Roy Williams team. I was pretty surprised.

Yep, Miles had only 1 point. That is okay as long as he's dishing out the assists. But he had 6 assists and 8 turnovers. Miles worst game of the season. Good thing Langford, Simien, and Giddens were on. :thumb: Miles is still my favorite KU player.

Miles is usually soild... and I really like the fact that he started hitting treys this year. His game last night was terrible - lazy passes, out of position, couldn't score (except the 1 free throw), silly foul on Massey... just awful.

Yep, I agree. Even several of his alley-oop pass attempts were way off the mark. Very uncharacteristic for Aaron Miles. It's as if he just wasn't focused. Hopefully, he got that out of his system. He's a player that works hard on his game and takes a bad game personally. When he has a lot of turnovers, he is disappointed in himself. I'll bet he'll be incredible on Saturday.

I was going to say the same. My guess is 13 points, 7 assists, < 3 turnovers :D
