I don't know why I haven't thought of tapping the amazing tech help source that is CP before, but anyway, here's the problem:
It happend a long while ago, I'm not exactly sure how or why but all of a sudden I noticed that 30 GBs were gone from my HDD (it says used space is 39 GBs, 9 of that is legit, I don't know where the other 30 went). When I check all my folders for size, they all appear normal except one - the one in Documents and Settings/My Name/WINDOWS.
To be more clear, it says the whole "Documents and Settings" folder takes up 35 Gigs when I click on properties, but no folders within it come even close to that (the largest is 4+ Gigs), they all seem normal except "WINDOWS" which takes up 0 Gigs, has another folder ("System") inside and no files.
I really don't know what to think, AVG says there are no virues. There is no spyware on the laptop. I just want my 30 Gigs back! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Accumulated "System restore points", maybe?
Nevermind. System restore points cannot exceed 12% of available disk space.

Sounds suspicious.
Try another virus scanner.
Also try the 'disk cleanup wizard', and run a defrag analysis on your system.

I tried system restore right after I noticed, didn't do shit. I really don't feel like formating, but I'm running out of space.

If you formatted your drive, I promise this problem would go away.

If it were my problem, I'd be in a dos prompt playing with the attrib command in the mydocu~1 directory. But, then I'm a dos genius.

Are you just bullshitting me with some made up BS commands? Seriously, I got a shit load of stuff I don't wanna lose and this laptop doesn't have a DVD-R, reformatting is the last thing I'd want to do.

the attrib command will show you hidden attributes. It sounds to me like you got a trojan with a bunch of crazy data squirreled away - either that or a roommate who wants to hide all his porn.

You can view hidden files by enabling the option in folder options (via windows explorer).
Of course, a REALLY sneaky trojan would disable the GUI shell from viewing the files...

Try deleting some porn every now and then.

Got 24 Gig's back last night. Killed everything bad on the comp, cleaned up and defragged. I feel mighty fresh indeed.
Had to DL and run a special utility from AVG to get rid of one of the viruses (the tough one), the others I just took care of manually, deleted all involved files and cleaned out the registry. Feels nice to have my comp back.
