FOX Shifts 'American Dad,' May Trim 'Development'
(Wednesday, February 09 09:02 AM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Even though its reviews were almost universally middling-to-negative, the preview of "American Dad" drew more than 15 million viewers to FOX on Sunday (Feb. 6) night. That successful performance has prompted FOX to juggle its future Sunday line-up, which may mean bad things for Emmy-winning comedy "Arrested Development."

"American Dad," the new animated comedy from "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, will still have its real premiere on Sunday, May 1. FOX has, however, moved the show up an hour from 9:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ET. "American Dad" will now officially launch between the 350th episode of "The Simpsons" and the fourth season premiere of "Family Guy."

The series, which will air encores as part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block, focuses on mid-level CIA agent Stan Smith, his wife, his two kids, his alien and his fish with the brain of a German guy.

FOX also announced that the schedule will allow the first three episodes of "American Dad" to air after new episodes of "The Simpsons."

As a result of the shift, "Arrested Development" will now have to end its second season by late April. According to The Hollywood Reporter, FOX is expected to reduce its order for "Arrested Development," though specifics haven't been announced. Despite endless critical acclaim and awards attention, "Development" is averaging only 6.06 million viewers per week this season in the Sunday 8:30 p.m. time slot.

That sucks. American Dad wasn't nearly as funny as family guy, whereas Arrested Development is brilliant. Gaah.

Great thinking there FOX. If a show does well after the superbowl it will definitly get those types of ratings on its own

I hate Fox. Seriously who runs these networks? If I made decisions as poor as they do I sure as hell wouldn't be employed very long. In addition they're jumping back on the Family Guy bandwagon like they had something to do with it's success. I guess its a necessary evil to produce more episodes.

Cartoon actors don't make salary demands. Niether do reality "actors".

It's the future of TV. NBC goes from paying the friends cast 1 million per episode to giving away 10 grand on Fear Factor.

It's one of the main reasons I watch very little network TV anymore. At least the cable channels are trying to provide TV shows that aren't solely driven by budget....to a point.

The American Dad pilot had some high points (the German fish was choice), some rough edges (a lot of which I'll chalk up to being the pilot), and a bunch of laughs. Family Guy-esque, of course, but far less reliant on the flashbacks that make FG so great. In other words, I have high hopes that it'll be McFarlane-based brilliance with enough differences to keep from being called a Family Guy clone.

It is unfortunate that its promotion is coming at the expense of Arrested Development, thought.Sort of like Malcolm in the Middle helping to put the final in the coffin of Futurama.

Shit... FOX is completely worthless aside from their Sunday night shows.

I didn't discover Arrested Development until December. I was missing out.

They're not Family Guy or Arrested Development great, but they're both pretty watchable, especially compard to most of the rest of the shit FOX has churned out, in my book.

I didn't hate American Dad, but I saw little to suggest it needs to be a separate show. Keep the good gags and plug them into Family Guy. The animation is the same, and there's nothing inherently funny about the premise of the Dad being a overamped Fed.

AD is about to join Freaks and Geeks, Futurama, Tru Calling, Wonderfalls and host of other decent shows dumped by Fox.

I tried to get into Family Guy but found the jokes rather obvious and unfunny. I doubt I'll enjoy this new show as well, unfortunately.

As for Arrested Development...best show on television!!

It sucks that Fox has to cater to the lowest common denominator but I guess that's the way it goes.

Makes ya want to go on a killing spree though, doesn't it?

Kidding...I'd never do that...as far as you know.

Funniest line in all of TV last year.

Maybe I should put it in her brownie. . .

For those not familar with the show, that line came from the family patriarch's lothario brother who is having an affair with the family matriarch while dad is on the lam from the police. He said this in front of Michael, the responsible son. He was talking about plying the mom with some ganja. The son thought he was talking about giving mom the ol' salsicce.

A couple of storylines in the offing;

Mitch Hurwirtz: "So when we meet Carl Weathers, he's on his way to get bumped from a flight so he can get a free airline ticket. He talks about how it's this crazy loophole in the system, and he just gets cheaper each episode. He's back this year. He hasn't been on yet, but he's got a part in a biopic about the Bluth family, and he's playing the role of Ice, the bounty hunter, who we established earlier in the season. So he's playing the part of someone that we saw two episodes earlier."

Mitch Hurwtiz said [on Charlie Rose] that they wrote a story for Ron Howard's narrator that hasn't been shot yet. The narrator gets jealous of another person narrating a documentary that Tobias is in.

I haven't seen American Dad yet... lan on watching the repeat on Adult Swim.

FOX is crazy if they bump a truly excellent show like Arrested Development for a new show... I don't care what show it may be. Arrested Development is one of the better shows on all of television. Too bad the Nielsen families are too dense to realize it ;)

On the other AD:

I received a phone call earlier this afternoon from one of our friends at Arrested. Here's how the situation is being perceived from the set.

As you might imagine, everyone was a bit disappointed when they learned of the episode reduction. They felt that the show has been making strides this season, with ratings that are better than most other Fox comedies. David may have overreacted slightly on Kimmel. As they continued to film episodes yesterday, they received a fax on the set detailing the letter that Fox planned to post on the Fox site. The fax was read aloud to everyone on set--including Will, Tony, and Jeffrey-- and everyone felt that it was very reassuring that Gail would make such an unprecedented statement in support of the show.

The cast and crew are immensely grateful for the outpouring of support they have received through this site and others, and are optimistic for a third season, though of course nothing is certain until May.

I love Family Guy, but American Dad was an unfunny knock-off of Family Guy's formula. Arrested Development is comedy gold, Jerry, gold!
