Whats better, sharpening stone or those carbide sharpeners that you pull the knife through? I don't want anything over $10.00 .

Learn how to use one or the other and you will be very happy. Takes a little practice, but you will get it down. I do not think you will get anything for $10, however.

If you aren't willing to spend more than $10, then why bother asking what's the best?

If you want to know the best for knife sharpening, it would be a set of stones from Lansky. Though even their small kit will cost you $35.

A $15,000 laser setup. Don't waste your money on anything else.

AB: Home maintenance includes the use of ... uh ... this mysterious tool.
GE: Right. This is called a sharpening steel.
AB: But it doesn't sharpen.
GE: No. This is a honing device and that's all.
AB: Okay, honing. That's that thing where you've got the edge bent over and you
want to bring it back up straight. Right?
GE: Realign it.
AB: Realigning.
GE: Okay. Now let me show you a simple way to use this piece of equipment.
AB: Okay, great.
GE: This, if you put the steel down on the counter
top so it's firm and then you take the knife
and starting at the heel of the knife pretend
you're going to slice a thin piece off the steel
and slowly, four or five strokes on one side ...
AB: For those of us that keep protractors in the
kitchen, that's like a 22° angle, right?
GE: That's recommended.
AB: Okay.
GE: ... and then you do the same thing on the
other side.
AB: How many times do I need to do this?
GE: Well, if you will start off with five on one
side followed by five on the other side. And
then do three.
AB: Right. Three.
GE: And then two and one.
AB: That's it. You don't need to go any faster than
that.
GE: That's it. All right, pick up the steel and use it
before each use of the knife.
AB: So if I'm getting ready to cut up mire poix for,
say, tomato sauce ...
GE: Right.
AB: ... I'd get out the knife, get out the steel and
honed before I start chopping.
GE: A few strokes and you're ready to go.

Some specialty sharpeners. More than $10, but this one is great for Spyderco and similar serrations:

http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=77

cheaper than $10---To create & maintain a convex edge on many knives an old mouse-pad and several sheets of wet/dry sandpaper in grits from course to ultra-fine works well. Instructions below.
Note: this won't work well if your knife is a 'hollow grind', it's for flat grinds (like an Opinel) & convex grinds & custom makers are the only ones I know who sell convex grinds. They take some time to create, but stay sharp. Easy to maintain.

Technically, you won't ever have to worry about sharpening a ceramic, since they can't be sharpened.

Yes they can. You just have to send them in to the manufacturer to get sharpened. Can't sharpen them at home or else you will ruin the edge.

Why would I help sharpen a knife, when I know your just going to plunge it into Saul's kidney for getting you banned from K-StateFans.com?

You live in OP, so head on over to midtown to Ambrosi Bros. They'll hook you up. I don't know what they charge per knife, but when you buy a knife from them, they'll sharpen it for free, so it can't be all that much.

I should have been more clear about what I was saying. I meant that you can't re-sharpen them yourself like you would a conventional blade.

for the price range you've listed, you can get a basic kit with honing oil, medium stone, and Arkansas stone. It will do the job fine.

But, you should check out the awesome one from Spyderco..

The ceramic stones are kick a**....a couple of passes on it with the blad, and it brings back the edge.
