View Full Version : What about Kickers?

Seeing that Nedney got cut by the Titans got me thinking -- do you guys think we'll keep Tynes, or look to upgrade? (Nedney is probably past his prime -- plus he's been hurt a lot lately).
I really don't have a stong feel for the situation, but if I had to guess, it seems Tynes didn't screw-up badly enough to warrant replacement, unless a truly fantastic kicker falls into our lap.

I hope we keep Tynes. He's got a big leg and did well, considering it was his first year.

Yeah, it's not like he wowed anybody his first year, but he definitely showed enough to warrant another season.

i'm more concerned with the punting situation. The three stooges we trotted out there last year stunk.

And they gave up a draft pick to get one of them...Cheek. :banghead:

2003 Morten was 16 - 20 long 49 and 59 of 60 xp
2004 Tynes was 17 - 23 long 50 and 58 of 60 xp.
The last 2 years, our FG kickers have attempted the 5th or so fewest FG in the NFL.
:hmmm: I thought those numbers were interesting, especially the attempted numbers..
Our emphasis needs to be on defense and see if we can get a punter somewhere (not the draft either)...

Those are great stats! My impression was that Morton was a much better kicker. Yes 16 out of 20 is a little better than 17 out of 23 but not that much better.
I think Tynes will get better in kicking field goals. IIRC he was allowed to attempt longer field goals than Morton.
I am concerned that his kick-offs do not seem to go far enough. 2 things: (1) Maybe with a full off season to get ready and practice he will have an even stronger leg: but (2) I noticed that neither of the S.B. kickers did much better than Tynes.
So, I guess we are as well off with him ... unless a stud were to fall into out lap in F.A.
Yes, as many have said ..... punting is a major issue. Don't know what we ought to do. D.V. has not had much luck getting a quality punter.
I guess the solution is for the D to stop the opposing team on the other side of the 50 yard line and thus our O will be able to at least get close enough for a field goal attempt....
It all goes back to ... IMPROVE THE DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Larry will have a better year if we cut him.

yea... i believe Tynes tried more long field goals than morten did as well.
so that 17 of 23 was a more difficult 23 as well.

Why does Carolina always get a woody about our punters?

Suerbraun [sp] ended up being a pro bowl punter for the Panthers, IIRC.

Tynes did really well, and one of those misses a freakin' 58 yarder. Another was a blocked kick.
