Does anyone here remember who the first NFL player was to break the million dollar contract barrier?
If my memory proves me correct is was none other than Mr. John Elway. I remember thinking that no services can be worth a million dollars unless they are saving lives or helping out society as a whole.
Boy havent things changed since then.
I believe it was Jerry Jones doing the "loop hole finding" in the salary cap and paying Deon Sanders to the first signing bonus that surpassed the 10 million dollar mark.

Just something to pass the time during the waiting game..............

Wow... can't recall. Wasn't his rookie deal in '83 like $5M? He might have been the first BIG money rookie, but I can't recall. I was only 12 in '83.

"The Colts made John Elway the first player picked in the 1983 NFL draft, but John stunned the football world by refusing to play for Baltimore. The Colts traded their rights to John to the Denver Broncos, who promptly signed him to a 6-year contract worth $12.7 million."

Wow.... my memory seems to have led me astray, that contract averages over 2 million a year. Now I'm stumped.
:hmmm:

Side note I didnt know:
"Elway was also a highly touted baseball prospect, and was drafted out of high school by the Kansas City Royals.."

The sad thing is that you are what, 21 or 22 and you have 25,000+ posts on this one board???

Are you saying old people are the only ones allowed to have significant post totals on this board?

He's actually much younger than that.

I think he's 19. I could be mistaken. He might be 18.

It seems we celebrated his 19th birthday a few months back.

Could be. He's been with us since the star board. That would have made him 13 or 14. Coolest little bastard ever. I'm a big fan. I'd do anything for that little shit. He hung with the adults and didn't even really get annoying for at least 5 years.

I can't stand most the other kids his age. I'm gonna have to insist he come to KC for his 21st. I want to buy him a bunch of beers.

I completely agree. I give him a lot of shit but he gives it right back. I consider him one of my "boys".

Theres a fine line between being "old enough to remember" and being "too old to remember".

I'm surprised that some of the older ones here dont recall the million dollar baby.

My guess was Eric Dickerson.

That was really a good guess, but a quick Google search:

"He served as running back for the Los Angeles Rams, with whom he signed a four-year, 10.65-million-dollar contract".

That was in 83', Elway was 86' so it would have to be someone pre 83'.

Montana?
