It's a show on MTV that they set up an elaborate scenario and make the person (celebrity) think something really bad happened to them.

Kind of a Gen-Y Candid Camera. Ashton Kutcher hosts a show on MTV, where he sets up celebrity friends in embarassing or maddening situations using a stable of improv actors who pretend to be authority figures. Tapes it all, and when they're about to go postal, runs out and tells them they've been Punk'd.

What I remember of Shannon Elizabeth's, they told the couple that someone had put a tape recorder in a hotel room they'd stayed in recently, and that a tape of their carnal adventures was spreading across the internet like wildfire. I think they had a guy portraying an industry rep saying they were gonna have to back out of some vehicle they had going with Shannon due to the controversy.

I don't have cable, so I rarely see the show. I did see this one while home at my parents one time, though. If I remember, it was even worse than you describe. Her agent was telling her she should try to capitalize on the tape that would be circulating around, ala Paris Hilton. ROFL

Thanks! I feel so old! :) I haven't watched MTV since they quit playing videos.

That 'Punked' show may be the worst show on the air today, and that's saying something.

The old Candid Camera shows were funny, because they were generally reasonably well thought-out and were designed to be harmless. That new show is nothing but a bunch of people lying to someone. It's pathetic.

The setups aren't always as funny, but the reactions, given they're punking celebrities, can be funny at times.
In particular, Brandy's segment, where he brother was 'caught' with stolen jewelry in his backpack, was funny as her response was to suck up to the black 'police officer.'

"Come on. You know me. I'm on TV. I'm a famous black woman. Be a brother."

The worst show I've ever seen was this car candid camera show on VH1 or MTV one. They plant a hidden camera in someone's car. First they film them driving around by themself. People are picking their noses, farting, and generally being gross, thinking they're in private. Then their "friend" gets in the car, knowing the camera is there. The friend then goads them into singing, dancing, and generally acting like a moron, while the camera rolls. At the end, the producers rush up with cameras in their faces, telling them they've been filmed the whole time. OH THE HILARITY! :shake:

If someone filmed me, in my car, without my knowledge, I'd be suing.

Oh, 'Boiling Point' is the worst of the lot. The one where they play obnoxious people and time how long people put up with it. That one where the plant was a deli sammich maker whose band aids kept falling in the food, and he'd drop sammiches on the floor, etc. Was :Lin:.

I wish Foucault was still around to theorize all of these voyeurism shows. Talk about the Panopticon out of control.

Seriously. It's a little creepy to me. The one where they were filming people in their cars was the one that really got me. While the car isn't really a "private" place, in that you can be viewed by people on the outside, there are at least moments of perceived privacy in a car. Additionally, as Americans we spend so much freaking time in our car, that it's become like a private, individualized space. To have a hidden camera in an individual's car is akin, to me, of putting a camera in their bathroom, bedroom, or any other place perceived as private.

I guess you missed all those episodes of Taxicab Confessions on HBO. There was a heck of a lot more soul [and azz] baring on that show.

Yeah, I loved that show. Those people, though, know that they're being observed by a cab driver at the least. They're in a "public" space, albeit shared with an Invisible Man of a cab driver (another interesting cultural phenom). There's a difference between that and being filmed while all alone in your car.
