Yeah that's probably close to how many albums they've sold. We had a discussion about that a while back. That first album, Cracked Rear View, sold about 16 million copies to date. It's funny that you can look at a list of the top selling albums of all time and you see all the "classics" like Eagles' Greatest Hits and Thriller and Dark Side of the Moon and right up there with them, "Hootie and the Blowfish - Cracked Rear View". :)

I think the commercial is funny...

As far as Hootie goes I liked them and still listen to it every now and again. There is no shame here their biggest problem was over saturation.

Alot of people don't know that Darius Rucker (lead singer in the commercial) put out a solo album and it wasn't bad...

Snip.

Not apropos of the subject at hand...but

...and I think we've had this discussion before...or maybe not--but the RIAA counts each disc of a double album as individual "units", i.e., Every time a copy of The Wall gets sold, it officially counts as TWO albums towards "total albums sold"...

Thusly, your list is technically false...

Indeed, sadly. Hey--the White Album is a double disc set as well. Not that I keep a regular eye on those charts or anything, but I wonder what happened to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack? It used to be listed in the Top Ten albums sold (incorrectly, as I already pointed out) on a regular basis.

Much more music fits on a CD than on an album. Many double albums were orginally cut as double CDs at first, but now are sold as just one disc. Eagles Live, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs...

Actually, I think that the white album would probably be one of the top selling ever, if it counted as one album. The CD is still two discs though... Much more than the 75 minutes or whatever that a single disc allowed when they started printing them. Now with blue lasers they can fit twice that.
