Drinking Boulevard Wheat right now.

I really like a good Guinness, as well as black and tans with Guinness and either Bass or Harp (sometimes called a half-and-half if w/ Harp).

And I'm open to trying about anything, especially european brews, although mainstream domestic beer (lovingly referred to as 'horse piss') doesn't do much for me.

Actually, Budweiser was started in Czechoslovakia, where they still brew and distribute it. In fact, there was a decades long lawsuit between the two rival "Budweisers." If you were drinking Bud in Europe, it was probably the Czech version.

Personally, I've had both. They both suck. I'd rather drink a light beer than Bud.

This was American beer, and as I recall, advertised as such. It looked exactly like what I'd have gotten in a bar back in Virginia.

(although a friend who tried it said it tasted differently - we postulated that was because they don't have the same laws regarding pasteurization and preservatives - everything tasted different there. i.e. a Grolsch I had over there didn't taste like a Grolsch here)

Well, hell... maybe the Europeans have their own annoying brand of beer drinker that walks into the bar and says, "Can I have an Import?" :)

I lived at Soesterberg AB, Holland (which was called "Camp New Amsterdam" back then). From there, I moved to Woensdrecht AB, Holland, which was a base they were in the process of building. They ended up bussing all of us to an international school in Ekeren, Belgium. They ended up stopping construction and turned the property over to the Dutch once the INF treaty was signed. From there, we moved to Ramstein AB, Germany. Came back to the States, enlisted, and then spent the next 5 years in Japan.

How did you like Japan? Was it outrageously expensive? Did you learn the language while you were there? Did you at any point eat live octopus dipped in hot sauce?

TheNextStep

Japan was cool, but so was every place I've been. If you get out and see it, appreciate it, and try to understand it, you'll be fine anywhere.

Yes, Japan was outrageously expensive. This is back in '96, so I imagine it's even moreso now... but I remember that if you walked into a bar and ordered their cheapest beer, you were still paying at least 6 bucks (at the 1996 exchange rate). The only things that weren't expensive, believe it or not, were used cars (dirt cheap), International House of Pancakes (don't tell Darryl Gardner), and sitting in the outfield grass at Seibu Lions Stadium (my favorite Japanese baseball team).

I didn't eat any live octopus, but I have eaten octopus. I ate lots of stuff that I had little to no idea what the hell it was. The only time I almost puked was when I was sitting at a very expensive, very traditional Japanese restaurant in Kyoto and they brought out this dish that was basically some kind of fish, cut in half, and served cold. I was always like, "hell, I'll try it" but I bit into that thing and I could hear and feel the bones snapping... man, I really did almost vomit it all back up. I finished that bite and decided to wait for the next course...

I tell you, though... it ruined sushi for me. If you eat sushi in Japan for 5 years and then you're planted in Omaha, you don't trust a damned thing! I've had good sushi in Portland and Las Vegas... but I'm too chicken to even try it here in the midwest.

Really the better question is what beer do I not like to drink. The answer would be any beer in a green bottle. (Beck's, Hieneken, Rolling Rock, etc.)

During my time in Germany, I'm not sure I ever turned a beer down. I absolutely refused to drink American beer while I was there, though. My favorites were Licher Export, Maisel's Weissen, Munzenburg Pils and Bitburger.

That stuff's incredibly expensive here, so I drink mainly Boulevard Pale Ale. Sometimes Foster's and Rolling Rock.

Seriously though, my wife's father was a case-a-day Alcoholic for years so she has a strong aversion to beer, and I respect her concern so I don't drink it. Oddly her phobia doesn't apply to hard liquor though so I'm rather fond of Vodka now... and lately Whaler's Vanilla Rum in soda which should be illegal for how good it is.

You need to transition; start with some darker or red ales.

Then move on to "black and tans".

Then try a couple of Guiness. Go easy at first: 2-3, then switch to somethin' lighter. Eventually, you'll be drinkin' it the whole night...unless you just decide you want some variety.

You'll be hooked before you know it. :BLVD:

Currently in to:

Carlsberg
Tuborg Gold
Guiness

It's pretty cool that you've migrated towards decent brew. I knew you didn't like beer cuz you'd been drinking shit.

FWIW, Boulevard is a decent micro. They do okay. But, they aren't a premium micro as far as I'm concerned. There's a LOT better beers out there in the flavors they offer. I drink as much of the stuff as the next guy, but only if there's nothing better available. You want a better Porter than Bully, try 1554 from New Belgium. The label says it's an ale, but it's actually a Porter. They call it an Ale to loophole some BS Texas law.

I go with Boulevard stuff around here cause its usually on tap at the bars I go to, and its my only choice between Bud, Miller, or Coors. I've tried just about everything in the Boulevard line, and the only ones I like are the Wheat and the Bully.

More Bass info:The ancestry of Bass Ale can be traced back to 1002 AD, when monks at the Benedictine Abbey at Burton on Trent first started to brew beer for the refreshment of their visitors. 1777 ambitious William Bass bought his own brewery, and brewed his first pint of ale with finest ingredients-aromatic English hops, the best malt, and the pure mineral-enriched water that is unique to Burton. The famous ale was liked by so many famous people in history include Napoleon III. Bass Pale Ale is the world's oldest registered trademark the famous and distinctive red triangle originally a shipping mark.

Guiness is an aquired taste. That's definitely true. I think it also has to do with why you're drinking - i.e. if I'm drinking to get sloppy, I'm more likely to go with Bud or something light, whereas Guinness or other darks are my sit at home and drink to relax beers. Kind of a different buzz to them, too, at least for me.

Is it a bad sign that I can associate different buzzes with different beers? :hmmm:

I'm generally like you in that I don't care for most dark beers. If you're feeling adventurous, try Shiner Bock. It isn't the beer snobbiest of beers but the "Bock" is misleading. It is darker than a lot of beers, but it doesn't taste bitter and doesn't make you feel like you just ate a meal.

Word of warning though: Don't let it get warm on you. Tastes terrible when it warms - moreso than most beers.

Kosmos Spoetzl was born, grew up, and earned his Brewmasters degree in Germany. After years of working at various breweries in Europe and Canada, he moved to the United States and, in 1915, bought “The Little Brewery in Shiner.” Not a whole lot ever changes in Shiner and that’s the way we like it. To this day, we still use Kosmos’ original recipes and painstakingly handcraft each brew one at a time making sure that every beer is naturally aged before it leaves the Brewery.

Even our Brewmaster and General Manager, John Hybner, hasn’t changed in nearly a quarter of a century. In fact, we still have less than fifty employees. But one thing that has changed is our willingness to share. There was a time when you could only get Shiner Beer in Texas. Now we distribute to 20 other states.
